George Burley has urged the nation not to judge him after just one game as he prepares for his first competitive match as Scotland manager.
The Scots open their World Cup qualifying campaign with a difficult away tie in Macedonia tomorrow, before travelling to Iceland four days later.

Burley heads into the double-header still searching for his first win since succeeding Alex McLeish in January after his previous three outings in friendly matches produced two draws and a defeat.

He knows expectation will be high now that the action begins for real but insists Scotland's progress over the entire campaign should determine whether he was the right man for the job, not one match.

"I'll be judged over the eight games," he said.

"It's about Scotland, the country. I want Scotland to do well, the team want to do well, and we need everyone to back each other.

"The friendly games have been great, I've had some very good performances in those games, and it's allowed us to have a look at players, which was very important.

"It's my first World Cup as a manager and I'm learning all the time. It's not about one game, it's not about four, it's about eight.

"We know it will be a difficult start but we're not going to finish first just because we win and we are certainly not going to finish last just because we get beat.

"So we are looking at the bigger picture, working together, and we hope everyone gives people supports whether it's the manager or the players because it is a tough prospect.

"The players will give 100%, I'm sure about that, and that's important for the nation."

Burley was remaining tight-lipped over his team selection, particularly his front pairing following a less than inspiring display from Kenny Miller and James McFadden in last month's drab goalless draw against Northern Ireland.

He continued: "We do have options up front, we've got people with ability, and we will announce the team tomorrow.

"One thing is for sure, I know they will battle until the end. That's our tradition and we won't give up. Whether we go a goal behind or a goal up, we won't change the manner of our play."

One players who will not be involved is West Brom midfielder James Morrison, who travelled with the rest of the squad but will miss out through injury.

"James is not going to be available," Burley confirmed.

"He has done some light training and we hope he keeps progressing for the Iceland game on Wednesday but he won't be in the squad for tomorrow."

Another player who could feature in the squad for Iceland is Steven Fletcher, who impressed by netting a double in the Under-21 side's 3-1 win over Slovenia last night.

"Steven is a young player who I think the world of," Burley explained.

"I gave him his debut and I thought it would be good for him to get a run out in the Under-21s.

"He scored two cracking goals and he will be in my thoughts for the
Iceland game. Steven will have a big future for Scotland over the years."

Right now, Burley's focus is on Macedonia and whether his players will be able to cope with temperatures topping 35 degrees, which met them upon their arrival in Skopje this afternoon.

"Of course it's going to have some impact but it's not going to stop us competing and playing," he said.

"There have been a number of players who have played in this type of heat before.

"In our last away game against the Czech Republic was in similar heat so it's something we have to get used to.

"You have to be wary of it and play a little different than you would do in Scotland but that's something that's part and parcel of trying to qualify for a World Cup.

"You have to play in different conditions against different nations and I'm sure we will be able to adapt to it."

Scotland's strengths lie in their determination to chase the ball and
work hard, attributes which could be difficult in the conditions.

"We're not going to stop that, we're not going to stop our game," Burley added.

"We've got a good blend of youth and experience, we have players with loads of energy, who are very competitive, with skill as well.

"We know Macedonia are an excellent side and they have had some very good results at home.

"We've watched them carefully over the last six months in different friendly games so we are aware it's going to be a difficult task but we are certainly not going to be frightened.

"We will play our game. It's a game where we have to be solid and hard to beat but express ourselves in as well."

Ye of little faith. Give the man a chance. I've been to all the home games where he's been in charge and to be honest I've been very impressed. Ok, we didn't score against NI but we were all over them and did everything but score. It'll be tough tomorrow. Like George I'm looking to the bigger picture and would take 7 points from a possible first 9.

If George Burley does not obtain 3 points against Macedonia he deserves to be judged! There is no excuse, no come back! If Scotland lose to Macedonia the world cup will be over in the first game!

I'd go along with that to some extent...I think our fire would still burn with a draw...but defeat I think will spell the end of our chances of qualification.

It's similar to Celtic's first Champions league match, but not quite as critical.

If Celtic fail to get 3 points at home against Aalborg , there isn't a cat's chance in hell that we'll qualify, and whatsmore, it would be very strong odds on that we'll get 4th spot.

It's a bit of a b!tch when you kick off with a 'must win'. No room for maneouvre on match day 1 is massive pressure. I don't think it's quite at that standard for Scotland, but it's very close...I think a draw would keep our hopes alive.

BEMUSED EXILE,

It's the start of a new World Cup campaign for our country, and the first competitive fixture for our new Manager, and I think that the very least we can do is get fully behind George Burley and the eleven men that he sends onto the field tomorrow.

Conditions for this game will be very trying, and a few good players are missing from our ranks, so we can't expect to go out and sweep aside a half-decent team like Macedonia away from home. For me, a draw tomorrow and a narrow win in Iceland would represent a good return from these two matches, but like any fan, I hope for the full six points.

I think that Burley is the right man for the job, and is a natural successor to Smith, who was very defensively-minded, and McLeish, who was only slightly less so. George is more likely to send out a team that will attempt to play attractively and to attack when it is prudent to do so. It is unfortunate that there are posters on this thread who have their own agenda and seem unwilling to get behind the man charged with improving the fortunes of our National team.

Come on Scotland.

Macedonia are not a poor side. Remember they drew with England ... ok maybe that's not a great example. But they are not a poor side and they will likely take points off other teams in this group. One other thing - second place could mean a play off, so we don't have to win the group.

Dundee Pie,

Burley backer 05/09/2008 23:13:11
Scotland have a very lot in common currently when it comes to football. Both have small poulations and have a bigger brother next door. Both have knocked off elite teams in recent times. And both are trying to be more aggressive in their style. This is a very interesting matchup. Scotland has more depth in their squad that has not entirely shown up due to the ever present injuries.
Its not up to Burley to win this game. Its up to the SFA to play their best.
In a couple years our strong goal tending and strong midfield will have a more experienced Steven Fletcher and Ross McCormack to strengthen the front. Defense has growing pains and due to retirement of its line up, but already Hutton is an asset to any team.
Tommorrow, Scotland play in a Scotland team and I will watch them win or lose. And to prove I back Burley, I will get up at 4am to watch them run around at 6am kick off in Western Canada.
My only complaint is the bloddy TV goons who have made it not possible to show it at home, for any cost. Setanta, you suk.

to the doubters, why dont you have faith in gb? is it the same reason why celtic fans dont want strachan? or the sheep dont want jimmy? and the hibees never wanted williamson? i dont know what the problem is, gb has always done well on limited resources.we will be ok, and there is no danger of us being humped with guys like gordon, mcgregor, mcmanus, hartley, fletcher, broonie, robson, maloney, mcfadden, miller, boyd in the squad, all winners.it wil be hard but i think we have the players to win.have faith and love scotland, follow follow scotland! sky and setanta is where all the money is, the sfa need the fancy tv deals, its upto setanta nd sky to make it affordable.3-1 escocia miller 2 n faddy 1.let hartley/maloney or robson take set pieces in final third.dont waste good/clear chances.

#14 they r a good team but their best player plays for lazio, we have a squad from old firm and premiership, we are stronger, we are scotland.scotland r like rangers n that we never do things the easy way, always we make it hard for ourselves, we'll prob go 1 down then fight back for a draw or late winner!we make it hard for ourselves always worrying bout opposition, lets just go and create chances then its upto strikers to take them.

All the best to Scotland,

Get off to a great start taking all six points from the first 2 matches.

And to hell with all the negative punters in the Scottish press, we should have enough to win our first 2 matches.

Silence of the Yams,

Pi sh. We still lack a big physical striker that can impose himself on p1shy wee teams like Macedonia, also lack of width!?! The 'referee' gave them the game albeit.
