Published Date: 07 October 2008
DEAN SHIELS today insisted Hibs' victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie was as much down to boss Mixu Paatelainen's courage as Derek Riordan's two goals.
With the match delicately poised at 1-1 and only 16 minutes to go, Paatelainen resisted the temptation to shut up shop and hang on for a point as he introduced the attack-minded Shiels into the action in place of defensive midfielder Steven Thicot.

And his decision paid dividends, Shiels initiating the move which ended with a controversial penalty award as Aberdeen's Charlie Mulgrew handled a flick from Steven Fletcher who was, admittedly, well offside.

Riordan's spot-kick gave the Easter Road outfit their first win in the Granite City in three years, allowing them to leapfrog Capital rivals Hearts into fourth place in the SPL table.

Paatelainen, who had made his intentions clear from the outset by starting Riordan, Steven Fletcher and Colin Nish together for the first time in a three-pronged attack, sang the praises of Shiels, claiming the Northern Ireland internationalist had changed the game.

But Shiels was adamant his manager deserved just as much credit saying: "His substitution was brave, swapping a defensive midfielder for an attacking one.

"I think seeing me coming on rather than another defensive player made the boys think 'hold on, we can win this'.

"At that stage the game could have gone either way and some might have decided to dig in and take a point which would have been an okay result as Pittodrie is always a hard place to go.

"But, with the players we have, we are more than capable of going to these places and winning and I was delighted with the manager's belief in us that we could go on and win as we did."

Paatelainen revealed he had swithered for ten minutes as to which player Shiels would replace as he discussed the topic at length with his assistant Donald Park. And, although Steven Thicot limped off, he insisted he had already made up his mind before the French star, playing his first SPL game since the opening day of the season, was hit by cramp.

The Easter Road boss said: "I wanted to really have a go and win the game and felt if we took off a defensive midfielder and put on an offensive player the balance of the game would change.

"I'd been talking to Donald as to which player should come off, we had many options to contemplate but I felt 'let's be brave and go for it'.

"I didn't think a point away to Aberdeen would have been a bad result but you saw from the starting line-up and the formation (4-3-3], we really went there to win. I wanted to be very positive and changing that never crossed my mind.

"It was a pre-planned move even although Steven had a touch of cramp. He'd have been able to go back on but I felt that was a good time to make the change."

Shiels, however, was unaware of the soul-searching of Paatelainen and Park as he prepared to take to the field. He said: "They never discussed with me who was coming off.

"I was simply told to get out there, get on the ball, try to create and, hopefully, I played my part."

Having played in every match since the start of the season Shiels found himself the victim of Paatelainen's decision to play Riordan, Fletcher and Nish as he was relegated to the bench.

Shiels, however, insisted he had no complaint, claiming the Hibee strikeforce was as good, if not better, than any in Scotland. He said: "No-one likes to be on the bench but it is a long season and it is a case of horses for courses.

"I was delighted he brought me on to try to get a goal and I was happy to have done my bit as I have every faith in the manager, he knows what he is doing."

And Shiels also believes finding himself a substitute was simply another indication of the strength of squad assembled by Paatelainen with the likes of Steve Pinau and Fabian Yantorno – both of whom were also on the bench at Pittodrie – Alan O'Brien and Filipe Morais all desperate to get a regular game.

He said: "Like myself they are all attack-minded players. We have a big squad but the manager has brought in quality rather than quantity.

"In Deek, Fletch and Colin we have quality attacking players. I don't think that, outwith Rangers and Celtic, any side in the SPL can touch those three, they don't even come close.

"I'm biased, of course, but we are spoiled for choice."

Hibs win at Pittodrie also marked the first occasion in three years that the Easter Road side have managed back-to-back away wins in the league, the Edinburgh club having notched up just four SPL victories "on the road" last season.

Shiels admitted he was at a loss to explain such poor form but insisted Paatelainen's squad was well equipped to change that miserable record. "I think we are well organised and we know we are capable, as we have shown in the past, of going to places like Ibrox and Parkhead and winning," he said. "I know things were looking poor pre-season but we have a great spirit within the camp, we have the lads pulling together as a team and that's what you need to win away from home."

Now Shiels will turn his attention to international duty, with Northern Ireland facing Slovenia in Maribor on Saturday before taking on European minnows San Marino in Belfast the following Wednesday – vital World Cup qualifying matches for Nigel Worthington's side after they picked up just one point from their opening two games against Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

The former Arsenal kid, who now boasts seven full caps, said: "I've been in every squad since the start of the season, which has been great news for me and, hopefully, that will continue.

"Winning at Aberdeen was the perfect way to break off for the international matches. Hopefully I can now go on and help my country get the results we want from these two games."

Should it not be "Mixu applied and Hibs are finished"

Loving the over confident hobos on here. Hearts have never spoiled the party in the past now have they, can't possibly see it happening again now can we ? Mind your midfield has been slated by all and the Hearts midfield contains class, see us sneaking it, howler from the hobo keeper, helping us to a 2 nil away derby victory, hobos to do there famous seat impression.

Wonder how many empty seats.

Rolland you rat!

No one is suggesting a party.

We will go about our business as usual and if all is equal, the best team will win. The tone of your post suggests you are fearful.

This argument could all be academic ofcourse, if the rumours about administration and your iminent demise are true!

Perhaps we will have a wake instead of a party!

Keep it coming lads, how many times is that now ? Seriously I've lost count of the number of times you've had us going into admistration.

Just a wee suggestion, why not forget all about Hearts going into Administration worse case is 3 years before we be back handing out defeats to you lot, you'd still be the wee team.

Over confident Hibees? Dont you even see the irony in your statement with all the rubbish you are spouting this morning. Most sensible Hibees keep there mouth shut before a derby. However, rightfully, if we win many will come on here looking for your arrogant self. Will you be around....?

Deary deary me Rolland. You really must be keeking it for the derby.

Empty seasts? Please tell me the last time this big massive team of yours filled the Dunbar end at Easter Road. Think the last time was maybe when yous started "We are unbeatable" and we all know what happened then.

This classy midfield eh? The same one that was outfought and outplayed by Killie at your big pink stadium at the weekend there? Clutching at the midfield straw because are average at best at the back and have NOTHING up front. Bamba, Thicot and Murray will have shots each of putting Mikey Stewart up in the air, while our forwards will see what the defence is really like.

Never one to talk up derby chances too much, but I'm really looking forward to this one. No party to spoil, think we'll just put you right in your place as the lithuanian paupers you really are.

Hearts Midfield... who cares none of them score anyways. Hopefully Mole and Tullberg play.. quiet day at the office for the defence and I think every hearts fan deep down knows that if Riordan Fletch adn Nish are on Form this is going to be a bad day to be a hearts fan. Roll on the 19th can't wait.

Who is in the Hearts Midfield anyways?? I know that we have Thicot , Murray , Keenan and i'm pretty sure that there ain't one better hearts midfileder.

The rumours of Hearts impending demise are not coming from Hibs supporters. It's all the Hearts supporters who are keeking themelves at the thought. It would be the best thing for you lot. Alt least you would get your club back.

#8 Rolland said, "Just a wee suggestion, why not forget all about Hearts going into Administration worse case is 3 years before we be back handing out defeats to you lot"

Oh Rolland you are in fine form today. Worst case scenario is that you wouldn't ever get the chance to play us again. There's no guarantee you would get elected back into the senior leagues, apart from anything else there are no vacancies in any of the professional divisions at the moment.

I won't hold my breath waiting for you to respond though, you never do when it's pointed out how wrong you are!
16

Rolland,

07/10/2008 13:47:53
Please, no Hearts fans think we will go into administration, I didn't see or hear of one Jambo considering this at the weekend. Its a non issue.
17

Rolland,

07/10/2008 13:52:36
Oh Iain,

I pity you I really really pity you.

If Hearts fold (and that is a great big huge massive IF). Then they create a vacancy do they not ? Now worse case is every other league has an additional promotion and we re-group and start in the third, it would be a very swift return given the amount of fans that would generate income. So fear not Iain I think I have just proved that your the one talking nonsense, Hearts demise would create a space thus allowing Hearts (in some shape) into the Scottish league.

You just don't get it we are to big a club / insitutation in the scottish game for there not to be a Hearts. The sooner Hobo's understand this and the fact any feeling of owning the capital they have will be short lived.

get yourself on to jamboskickback, ratboy!

There are loads of disgrunted yams pondering the fate of their once proud club.
20

Iain Bhern,

#17 Rolland, I want you to think long and hard about this. If (and only if mind) Hearts were to fold there is currently a queue of clubs waiting to get elected into the third division. You would have to start from the very bottom in the junior leagues. Next there is the small matter of your owner's infamous outbursts about bias in the Scottish game. That will have done your case for re-election no good at all and indeed perhaps quite the opposite. In recent times the only club to remain in the professional leagues after going out of business is Airdrie and that was by the back door. They are now Airdrie United and only got to stay up because they were taken over by an existing member of the league i.e. Clydebank. Just because Hearts are a so called big team does not guarantee they will be straight back into the leagues should the worst ever happen!
21

Rolland,

07/10/2008 14:17:14
Iain

I'm confident that should the worst happen they will be straight back in there, via a back door / trap door or by whatever means possible, back handers / masons etc they will be there.

Now I'm off tae meetings so might not respond for a bit.
22

the real mixu62,

07/10/2008 14:22:44
Thats right Rolland. Your AA meetings come before any football debates. They won't be happy that you turned up reeking tho, you have obviously been on the sauce to post the drivel you have been posting!
23

Iain Bhern,

#21 Rolland, "back handers". So you condone bribery and corruption then? The very thing Vlad complains about!
24

Rolland,

07/10/2008 14:42:23
Iain

One way or another we will be there, that is what I am saying, back handers / applied pressure, knee cappings, who knows what goes on but an esablished team such as Hearts will always be around one way or another.

#26 By Greyskull I assume you mean Ibrox, or are you nicking something else from Celtic now ? Isn't that what they call Ibrox. So your now using as a name for Tynie as opposed to the Pink Bus Shelter, yada yada yada. Very witty and orginial indeed.

Assuming you are referring to Tynie, then yes I was present. Did you take the trip to Aberdeen ?
