Hearts 0 - 0 Airdrie Utd (Airdrie Utd win 4-3 on penalties): Airdrie take another capital scalp

THE name of Airdrie resurfaced to haunt Hearts again last night as Csaba Laszlo's hapless side were knocked out of the Co-operative Insurance Cup at the first hurdle in a mediocre second round tie decided by a dramatic penalty competition.
This was the first time Hearts had faced Airdrie United in a competitive fixture since the Lanarkshire club were reformed in 2002, but the sense of despair was familiar for their supporters who would recall the last meeting with Airdrieonians in the 1995 Scottish Cup semi-final which was also lost.

Goalkeeper Stephen Robertson was the match winner for Kenny Black's First Division side last night, who were reduced to 10 men in extra-time when Kevin McDonald was sent off, stopping penalties from Lee Wallace and David Obua. Simon Lynch, Marc Smyth, Mathew Hazley and Scott McLaughlin all converted for Airdrie with Darren Smith seeing his effort saved by Marian Kello. Christos Karipidis, Eggert Jonsson and Michael Stewart netted for Hearts, but in vain.

Airdrie fully merited taking the tie to the additional period where their resilience was severely tested by the 107th minute dismissal of McDonald for a foul on Christophe Berra, the midfielder having already been booked in regulation time for a challenge on Jonsson.

Robertson was the hero for the visitors as Hearts desperately looked to make their numerical advantage count, pulling off three outstanding saves to deny Deividas Cesnauskis twice and then Christian Nade to take the match to the shoot-out.

Despite international clearance for new Hungarian signing Janos Balogh having been received earlier in the day, Marian Kello retained his place in goal for Hearts.

Any suspicion of interference in team selection from club owner Vladimir Romanov, who presumably was preoccupied at home in Kaunas with his local team's Champions League qualifier last night, would be tempered by the fact there were only two changes to the line-up which had defeated St Mirren on Saturday.

Jonsson, the Iceland international midfielder, was deployed at right-back in place of Jason Thomson while Saulius Mikoliunas returned from suspension at the expense of Andrew Driver.

Hearts started brightly, dominating possession and territory. Laryea Kingston, playing just behind lone striker Jamie Mole, combined well with Mikoliunas as the home side appeared to target Airdrie's left flank as their greatest source of vulnerability.

Referee Eddie Smith, one of the officials who have found themselves under fire in the opening weeks of the season, made his first contentious decision of the night when he booked Airdrie midfielder Joseph Cardle for simulation. It appeared harsh as Cardle looked to have been fouled by Jonsson.

Smith then rejected a penalty appeal from Hearts when Stewart went down in the area under a challenge from Airdrie captain Smyth. It was a plausible claim, but while Smith turned it down, he did not caution Stewart for what he presumably felt was a dive.

While Hearts continued to control lengthy spells of play, another teasing Mikoliunas cross missed by both Obua and Mole in the penalty area, Airdrie were threatening on the counter attack and perhaps unfortunate not to snatch the lead before half-time.

Paul Di Giacomo, their close-season recruit from Kilmarnock, forced Kello into his first save of the night with a well struck shot from the edge of the penalty area and the Slovakian 'keeper was up to the task, making a fine save.

Kello was left helpless three minutes before the interval, however, when Di Giacomo unleashed a stunning shot from all of 30 yards. The ball struck the underside of the crossbar, bounced down and then out. Airdrie players claimed it had crossed the line initially, but assistant referee Craig Young was not in a good position to judge. To Hearts' relief, play was waved on.

Buoyed by how close they had come to making the breakthrough, Airdrie had a greater sense of purpose and belief as they began the second half by forcing Kello into another save after McDonald neatly engineered a shooting opportunity for himself.

Hearts responded smartly, Kingston delivering a fine cross from the right which bamboozled the Airdrie defence. Mole got his toe to the ball, but the young Englishman was unable to get enough power on his effort which was scrambled to safety by Robertson.

Laszlo made his first change of the night with 20 minutes remaining and it was not a popular decision with the home fans who jeered the withdrawal of Kingston who was replaced by Audrius Ksanavicius. Kingston made his own feelings clear, angrily remonstrating on the touchline with the manager who had to usher him into the dug-out.

Mikoliunas then contrived to miss a simple chance from close range, signalling an end to his involvement as he was replaced by Cesnauskis.

Hearts: Kello; Jonsson, Zaliukas, Berra, Wallace; Mikoliunas (Cesnauskis 74), Karipidis, Stewart, Obua; Kingston (Ksanavicius 70); Mole (Nade 93). Subs not used: Palazuelos, MacDonald.

Airdrie United: Robertson; Smyth, Donnelly, Nixon, Hazley; McDougall (Smith 83), McDonald, McKenna, McLaughlin, Cardle (Brown 81); Di Giacomo (Lynch 78). Subs not used: Noble, Hollis.

Referee: E Smith.

Attendance: 6,844.

Fair report....24 shots at goal but never looked like scoring. KINGSTON coming off when Obua had faded out the game was a BAD decision.

Only slight positive was Kello played OK.

##no doubt Airdrie should have been awarded a goal(over the line) & deserved to go through.

Must sign a goalscorer.

Here is the link to the BBC Sport Predictor:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/sportscotland/predictor/

I have set-up a minileague for all posters on here willing to join.

It’s just a bit of fun and it starts with next weekend’s SPL fixtures.

All you need to do is go to the link and create your own membership. Try and make your user id as close to the one you use on here, so we all know who you are.

NB. If you are already registered and have points on the board, please re-register with a slightly different user id for this minileague, so that everyone starts on ZERO points.
Anyone joining with points already accrued will be removed.

Once you’re in, select “My Minileagues” and enter . . .

The Scotsman Forum

. . . as the minileague name.

The password is . . .

thescotsman

Once you have joined the minileague, you can start making your predictions. You get 1 point for a correct result and 3 points for a correct score. After each set of fixtures you can check the minileague table to see where you are and who is on top etc.

Enjoy it. It’s just a bit of fun.

#40 hmmmm, how exactly is this a better result than the hibs "hammering" you mention? neither club have anything to be proud about after these two results but all hibs fans will hold there hands up and admitt that it was a shocker rather than make up some ridiculous excuse about how your pleased that your team couldnt score a goal over 120 minutes against a lower league team. Clearly by looking at the number of first team players in the line up laszlo and the rest of the hearts management were concerned enough about the competition to put out a full strength side
34

Harlem Tam,

28/08/2008 02:48:47
#44 thepundit - Celtic did lose 5-0 to Artmedia in Bratislava, but at least we made a fist of it at Celtic Park, winning 4-0 and only a whisker away from extra-time. Rangers surrendered like meak little lambs against Kaunas, so that was worse than Celtic v Artmedia.

#50 - How did you surrender like meak little lambs?

Watch a video of the second-half. At 1-1 Rangers played for the draw. YES - RANGERS PLAYED FOR A DRAW AGAINST A LITHUANIAN SIDE. Also, the way Rangers tried to retrieve the situation in the last 4 minutes was laughable, both from the players AND the management.

Did say yesterday not to mock the afflicted as Hearts were not a good team and could quite easily sucumb to a smaller side.Thing is this is an awakening call to the suporters. This team is going nowhere. It is full of overpaid individuals who are pure mince.Stewart....don`t make me laugh. Not International class,Burley sees through him.Kingston,a waste of space, wants to play in hs own team, does not know the meaning of teamwork. The honeymoon`s over now ,it`s back to reality.I said also last year that they will be right in the botttom 3 and have not changed my mind. The fans have been short changed again by this despotfrom Lithuania .When are they going to waken up ?A team who plays with heart and a bit of teamwork will easily see off this bunch. No skills whatsoever. No goalscorers.I`ve said enough ,where`s my cup of tea ?

What do you expect, the same players as last season, Berra take the money before Monday, Wallace, Mole, Karipidis, Ksanavicius and Nade all have to go NOW. we should try and buy Memmet from St Mirren (if he would come )the fans are being cheated, 'real quality' where about, we did not have any players on the park and I now fear going to Hamilton.

PS. Congratulations Airdrie.

Good morning fellow Jambos...No it wasn't a dream!
I have to say that Laszlo failed last night, that happens, and perhaps he will forget any notion playing "Eggy" at right back ever again, and also have a word with Obua about his "roving".
Once again we totally dominated/shredded opponents for half an hour, and with a proper front man, we would have had a comfortable win last night.
Airdrie worked hard, but we were resposible for our own downfall.
Stick the chins out lads, we are going to take a few.
Roll on Saturday!

No one batted an eyelid when Hearts got knocked out of the League Cup by Livi when Burley was in charge. I for one am only disappointed at the result due to the players having to go into extra time wasting energy better used against Accie on Saturday. We should have put out a younger squad and see what happens.

Congratulations to Airdrie, you completed what you set out to do, to frustrate and hit on the break good luck for the next round, also for what it`s worth I don`t think it needed to go to ET or penalties, as the shot from di Giaccomo looked like it was a perfectly good goal which hit the underside of the bar then bounced back out.

Listened to the comentary of Hearts.TV and there was this worrying interchange between Mark Donalson and Gary McKay:

Dear David Obua,

Congratulations!! You are the winner of an utterly unique prize. It’s the coveted Heart Of Midlothian ‘Most Apathetic Penalty Ever Seen At Tynecastle’ award!!

To be honest, this really wasn’t hard for our panel to decide upon at all. It was in the slouched shoulders, the bored-looking demeanour, the minute and a half it took you to trudge from the centre circle and your overall lackadaisical air screaming out that you couldn’t care less if you missed the penalty or not. That the entire stadium knew you were going to miss from the moment you reluctantly set off on your walk, meant there was no competition whatsoever when it came to handing out this award.

Now to the exciting part, your prize!!! You will receive the 2 weeks wages of around 20 thousand pounds, that you clearly don’t deserve, and a one-way ticket back to Kaiser Chiefs, secure in the knowledge that as Hearts main signing of the summer you have been an utter disaster. Oh, and your free kick was pathetic.

Now take the ticket and p#ss off.

Yours, hoping never to see you disgrace Tynecastle again.

With all due respect to Airdrie (in fact well done)Hearts can forget it, on this display.
They should be beating a team from the lower leagues with relative ease. Airdrie deserved this by all accounts.
I thought Hearts defence was inadequate in previous games, but it would appear the team needs major surgery, and the players are just NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
What purpose signing more goalkeepers serves is straight out of the loony bin.

Banks was/is a perfectly good keeper, and if he does want a move WHO COULD BLAME HIM?

#74 At least Hibs scored 3 goals!
All of the premier league needs to wake up and realise that there is not that much of a gap between the premier league and the first division (including the old firm). The fact that Queen of the South nearly won the Scottish Cup last year proves that. The SPL should consider raising the number of teams to 16 or 18 and two teams should get relegated. Teams will only have to play each other twice rather than the boring 4 games that we have at the moment and I feel the league would become more competative, what league in the world only has one team go down and that still depends on how good the ground is of the team who wins first division, joke!. These lower league teams are competing with Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen with no mony let's see how they would get on with the TV money that they would get from being in the SPL. Airdrie for the cup, Jimmy Sandison #1

Why was Obua not hooked. Manager should take the blame.

Until then, i live to see Airdrie Ned FC get humped and go the way of Clydebank.

Wow, didn;t realise Hearts were so popular!!

Anyway, always knew it was going to be like this for the season....win some, lose some, raise our hopes then dash them in an instant.

Huge test for Csaba coming up - Hamilton away and this will be a real indicator of his motivational skills.

#93 Really think that good goal scorer as he may be (well, was - who knows now?) Hearts wouldn't really want the baggage that comes with him.

Hibs can not afford him! thats why they got rid of him in the first place!

I have a very reliable source & he will be in talks with hearts tomoz afternoon to agree terms not my first choice but he can score goals as proved!

No disaster. The only shame is that Miko is finding his way onto a team sheet. Airdries defensive record is remarkable but cant help feeling it was aided by the decision to play only 1 striker again, surely negative in this scenario. Hearts need to have players capable of breaking this down, find it hard to believe DEFENSIVE midfielders are the priority when the main thing has to be a striker, 24 efforts on goal, 17 missing the target completely tells its own story.
Its not the quality of play at the moment that will haunt us, its the quality of finish, you can play as well you like but if you cant finish, its a bit like a broken pencil - pointless.

Fair play Hoobs lap it up as I for one had it coming after the slagging i was giving out yesterday... And before an Airdrie game too... DOH!

I did however say that if there is one team on this earth garaunteed to upset the Gorgie applecart then it is that little band of tinkers.

Did i mention that i hate Airdrie?

That makes infinite sense!

England had a Premier Division plus three divisions numbered as 1 2 and 3.

Guess what we did the same!

We dont have as many clubs as England.
We dont need 4 divisions!
The old 1st divsion and second division worked perfectly well and it also meant that clubs could sit mid table and have a go,instead of fearing for their lives and closing the game down hoping for a 0-0 result and a point to save their skin.

Why do we copy Englands set up anyway?

In Scotland we have teams which play to crowds of 700 for goodness sake ,but thats because of our low density population (and partly because 50% of every village in Scotland supports one of the Old Firm teams and proudly proclaims we won the league, except that half of them dont even know where Glasgow is,never mind have been there!
The best way to help the Clydes and Hamiltons and the like is let them play the big clubs and maybe some will prosper and do what full time clubs should do and play football secure in the knowledge that the powers that be are looking after their interests and not just the very top flight(most of whom also struggle anyway).
Totally agree,Two divisions is what we need.
Clubs whose grounds are not up to standard will have a better chance if they occasionally get a crowd !Better still GIve each club a weighted payment from the controlling body to bring their grounds up to scratch. Its in the interests of every fan to have a league worth watching in facilities worth having!

Now i hate Deek Riordan as much as the next man but if there is one thing to possibly have been made blindingly obvious after last night to Vlad and Csaba then it is the need to bring in a goalscorer ASAP!

We are starting to look like hibs under Collins... All nice passes and creating chances but nobody to put them away.

Csaba said he would favour a 4-4-2 this season but understandablt, considering our lack of good strikers we are yet to see it transpire.

Tullberg cannot be the last striker to be signed this season or we are going to toil.

Nade had better get on the laxatives as it p155es me off to be struggling for goals when we have a former French U21 international eating himself to death on the bench.

I thought hearts would just manage to sneak through, but their defensive hoofball tactics (allied to kicking the opposition) failed spectacularly. They clearly have even less real talent than I first thought. Will be a real slog for them in the relegation dogfight.

Kenny (Bluenose) Black came back to haunt them.

Big Kenny Mac
99

Who?,

28/08/2008 09:18:17
Firstly, bit of a soar one but no great loss. In many ways it will help to focus minds for the games ahead.

Secondly what this means is Zaliukas, Mikoliunas, Cesnauskis, Ksanavicius, Mole and Nade should be forced out quickly. We were told during the close season that the deadwood will be moved on but from what i can see it is still prospering and playing regulary.

Thirdly Csaba has this very worring habbit of playing decent players (jonsson and Karipidis) out of position turning them into pretty ineffectual performers. I can't see how this will improve them as players or help them mentally.

Yes we have a footballing rivalry and we like to slag each other off... This is not by any means a recent thing or even unique in the world of football but if you were not a wee geek in a darkened room who doesn't attend games you would realise this already from your 'Greatest rivalry' in football thing that goes on in the weeg.

Seriously you and your ilk are universaly despised by both hearts and Hibs so why not just go back to your daily sport and leave the civilised citizens of the capital to get on with our rivalries.

We can't just "force" out players without someone wanting to buy them.

We cannot simply summon up 8 new players - especially to a club that has a lot of work to do to rebuild it's reputation in the transfer market.

So if were to get rid of those players you mention, who would play?

We are not going to correct 3 years of mis-management in 6 weeks so we need patience - this season is going to be frustrating but it will be better than last year.

No panic but it highlights the need for 2 strikers. The midfield got no movement from the forwards all night and Kingston should be dropped for his performance - he didn't want to be there and if he's going to play like that, I dont want him there either!
