Return of the native
TO GET to Tiger Mountain, you head east from Oklahoma City, pass the myriad churches, restaurants (The Pig-Out Palace) and hotels (Caged Wrestling Here!) on Interstate 40 and, after about 80 miles, turn off when you get to the place where Crazy Snake had his last battle against the white man's government.

City guide: Havana
WITH its dilapidated colonial architecture, 1950s cars and lack of Coca-Cola and McDonald's, Havana inhabits something of a timewarp.

BOSTON, said Charles Dickens, "is what I would like the whole United States to be." And it's easy to see why: one of America's oldest cities, it is also among its most European, with a civilised, cultural ambience and a sure sense of its place in the world. The birthplace of John F Kennedy, Jack Kerouac and Sylvia Plath, it is home to world-class art galleries and restaurants, and two of the US's most renowned universities, Harvard and MIT.

City guide: Miami
TAKE property developer Julia Tuttle, add Henry Flagler (the railroad man she persuaded to extend his tracks south from Palm Beach) and throw in gambling, drug trafficking, the American entrepreneurial spirit, wave after wave of immigration from all points of the compass, and, of course, Gianni Versace, who lived and died amid the Art Deco splendour of South Beach...
Kinder surprise
WE ARE sipping white wine on a balmy evening, as the sun sets over the high peaks of the Bavarian Alps in Austria. Dinner on the hotel terrace, an organic carvery and piles of fresh salad, is eaten at the unhurried pace my husband and I once took for granted before becoming parents.

Greatest show on earth
WE ARE a few hundred feet up the hillside when the most spectacular view unfolds. In the north, the pure snowy white of a mountain range hedges in the broad blue waters of Lake Myvatn. To the east, volcanic steam belches skywards from sulphurous mud pots.

The naked truth
THEY say there are 365 beaches in Antigua. It's a neat bit of arithmetic - one beach for each day of the year - but has anyone actually counted them?
Ready, jetset, go
LIKE most people, my fear of flying began with a bad flight. I was travelling between New York and Florida in the middle of a storm. There was really bad turbulence - the passengers were told to put their safety belts on and then the cabin crew were too, which just terrified me. The plane then proceeded to bounce all the way to Florida and it seemed to repeatedly plummet out of the air - that was the scariest part for me.
