Published Date: 25 August 2008
SIR Sean Connery today backed calls by the SNP for a separate Scottish Olympic team.
The James Bond actor, a supporter of Scottish independence, gave his backing to the calls as he launched his memoirs in Edinburgh on his 78th birthday.

He told the audience at a question and answer session: "Scotland should always be a stand alone nation at whatever, I believe."

Connery was launching his autobiography Being A Scot in front of a sell-out crowd at the Book Festival in his native Edinburgh.

SNP First Minister Alex Salmond, the actor's brother Neil and wife Micheline were among those in the 300-strong audience.

The actor also revealed his enthusiasm for US tycoon Donald Trump's controversial plans for a £1 billion golf resort in north east Scotland.

He told how he met the tycoon in New York soon after the proposals were announced.

Connery told the audience: "I said 'Well, I think it's terrific'.

"But I had no idea what local repercussions would be.

"My first response was I couldn't see anything but benefits for that part of Scotland because it's pretty neglected, apart from the oil fields."

He also joked with the audience about the stick he now faces from Celtic fans since switching his football allegiance to Old Firm rivals Rangers.

The actor was joined by co-author of the book Murray Grigor, in a session chaired by broadcaster Sheena MacDonald.

Connery told the audience that he had been a Celtic supporter when he was younger, after being introduced to the club by his father who supported the club.

He was even involved in a benefit match for their legendary former manager Jock Stein.

"Then I changed my allegiance later with (Rangers owner) David Murray," he told the audience.

"I met him when I got the freedom of the city here and immediately, we had chemistry.

"We enjoyed each other's company – he's an amazing chap and we've stayed very, very good friends since."

He added, to laughter from the crowd: "And I get spat on if I go to Parkhead."

Connery added that even his brother Neil said he should support Edinburgh sides Hearts or Hibs.

"I think that's partly to do with living here all the time. When you really get outside, I think you get a more objective look."

A promising footballer, the actor told the audience that he was offered terms by former Manchester United manager Sir Matt Busby to turn professional in his 20s, but rejected this to pursue an acting career.

He also recalled how he had been urged to ditch his legendary Edinburgh lilt as a budding young actor, by friend Robert Henderson.

He said: "He told me the first thing I would have to do is get rid of the accent, because it's too pronounced.

"For example, in South Pacific, Millicent Martin thought I was Polish."

His well-known love of golf came after the actor took lessons for scenes he had to play in the Bond movie Goldfinger.

"I got caught, really caught by it," he told the audience.

"I have to say it's been one of the most important things in my life," he added.

"I think it should be in all the schools, but they should be taught correctly what it's about.

"It's about a code of conduct and you call shots against yourself."

He also took a swipe at former Prime Minister Tony Blair when it was mentioned that, in the books, Bond had gone to Fettes College in Edinburgh.

"Tony Blair went to Fettes too – it just proves there were failures," he added.

He hailed Hollywood director John Huston, who directed him in The Man Who Would Be King, as unique.

He said: "He was not intrusive, but was very smart and had a tremendous sense of pictures."

And despite a reputation of being difficult with actors, Sir Sean said he enjoyed working with Alfred Hitchcock.

He recalled that during a scene in the movie Marnie, the English director stopped the action and told the Scot "I think you should have some dogs feet in your speech."

As the actor looked round in bemusement, the director said: "Pauses."

The fact that this foreigner tries continually to meddle in our politics is in the worst possible taste. We don't meddle in the affairs of the Bahamas.

Good man. Logic dictates that if we can be proud of our football team even while they are losing we would also be proud of an Olympic team. This is regularly shown at the Commonwealth games, unfortunately the only time we represent ourselves. There is no barrier from the IOC for Scotland applying for an individual team and I would be pleased to see our Government do so. We might have to wait till after a referendum however since none of the opposition want to put Scotland first on any level. A pity and if they imagine that their union jack fest (when the Saltire was banned by a totalitarian power!) adds up to a new found love for Britain they are dead wrong. Connery's biography title sums him up perfectly.

Sean Connery is entitled to his viewpoint the same as anyone else.

Seeing however as he does not live here, does not pay taxes here and advertises Japanese Whisky all over the world, that very same viewpoint should be treated with the contempt it deserves.

Somebody gag him please. What arrogance to suggest that by leaving Scotland you suddenly realise that supporting your local Edinburgh team is a futile gesture. So Sean, you're basically suggesting that thousands of hearts and hibs supporters are idiots? We support our team because that's where we're from, not because we become pals with a chairman.

As for swapping allegiances from Celtic to Rangers...erm can you actually do that? I think these comments prove that 'Shhhean' lacks what most other Scots possess - a sense of loyatly to their own locality and country.

Sums the guy up really.

I read a wee bit of his book online. He is resentful at being poor. He was only poor because other people refused to share their wealth with him or his family.

He was a "socialist" when he had nothing, and when he made millions. A tax exile, refusing to share his wealth with Scotland. What an ars***le.

We have been told many times by the SNP that their type of nationalism is inclusive, civic nationalism and is therefore applicable to all those living in Scotland irrespective of their place of birth or ethnic origin. Surely by this measure Sean Connery has to be considered as a Bahamian.

14 Ugly George

Of course Mr Connery is a Bahamian, the British government probably ask him every few years which nationality he is. He probably tells them Bahamian and fills a foreign national's tax return when required.

Quite why the government gave him a knighthood when he is a foreigner? I guess like all parochial Scot's he has a chip on his shoulder, he wants his cake and eat it and likes to greet when is not centre of attention, depite it being him that chose to leave the Scotland and have a foreign domicile of choice.

No one threw him out! He turned his back on Scotland like the cringe that he is.

The Smiler,

How sad and desperate is Sir Sean becoming , yet again trotted out by the Nats in the hope of impressing the scottish public with a "Hollywood" star , lets face it he's made one helluva career out of playing James Bond , had he not had that role he'd be just another jobbing actor - Scotland is capable of better and have better already in James McEvoy , Ewan McGregor and even the often over-looked Robert Carlyle - Connery couldn't hold a candle to them in the art they all earn a living in.

I'll take him more seriously when he moves here and pays tax like the rest of us , and has to put up with living in the most violent developed small country in the world (not the best as the ad men would have you believe).

Scotland to prosper...,

25/08/2008 15:40:37
So the man made the most of his life, how it makes him a deserter of his country I don't know.

Connery comments on issues he is more than qualified to talk about having been an avid observer of Scottish politics for many years, where he lives is of no consequence.

Is Brown banned from talking about Scottish politics just because he lives in England? No, but he should be banned purely for being an idiot.

People speak of how Scotland would have been 2 medals worse off if they had competed as its own nation. Scotland didn't win any medals at the Olympics, we weren't represented.

It just doesn’t make sense that a nation, recognised by many other nations throughout the world, with its own Parliament and a population of 5million, should not be represented at the greatest sporting event in the world.

Sean Connery is many things, but he isn't a football fan or a politician. He's a 78 year old retired actor.
That's all.
He does his best to promote Scotland everywhere he goes, and is proud of his heritage. That's good enough for me. Give the man a break.

Patronising tw*t. Deluded, narcisstic old has been, he should have some pride for his home city but seems to take pleasure in bad mouthing and criticising us from his New York loft apartment and his bahamian idyll. Get over yourself, your craft and achievements are shallow and unimportant. Mr Connery I hope you read this!

I really believe that the antiquated views of the member for the Bahamas can only harm the SNP's cause. His concept of the powerful nation state went out with the '60s and he is one of the most insular and inward looking individuals imaginable when it comes to "analysing" what's best for Scotland's future in this world of globular interdependence.

In any event, we all know that he's more of a Tory in his attitude to wealth and that his support for the party was somewhat muted under Swinney's leadership, when he wasn't bedazzled by the "charisma" of Supernat.

Btw, I'd advise against even starting to read his ghostwritten hagiography, sickening self aggrandising ramblings and all.

Why is this a headline? He is a nationalist so what a shock he wants a Scotish Olympic team.

This old a**hole has no right to comment on my future when he doesn't even stay here or contribute to our society by paying taxes here.

Isn't it ironic the only reason he is famous is because he played a BRITISH secret agent. I'm really glad the SNP work with this ex-Scotsman as some sort of ambassador when he condones hitting women. What a role model for our young!

Sean who? When did he become an olympic or indeed sports expert?

Chris Hoy today SLAMMED any such thought of an olympic team at a scottish level. He said "i would not have won my 3 gold medals if it wasnt for the british team".

of course sean supports aNYTHING scottish, thats easy claims to make. We should be proud to be scottish yes, and proud of our achievements but also recognise a good deal and good set up when we see one. Newcastle or newhaven, coventry or cambusland, lets support and nurture our talents and youth as one. What i do support is increasingly localised sports facilities and scottish and even city wide sports and health initiatives planned and delivered locally- why because that makes sense and would make a difference.

Lets say no to pointless and superficial separation and yes to things that nurture and encourage.

Sir sean once again got his head in 00 Heaven!

#16 AJ: I think you'll find that Alex Ferguson's the only serious alternative candidate for GLS (and I think you'll find that he's made his views on the Nats' separation agenda and their eclectic mix of policies quite clear!)

No one in the modern age can hold power for any length of time in Britain without becoming disliked in the extreme: over time, I think you'll find that Supernat's no different!

I like Sean Connery and have enjoyed most of his films. He is entitled to his views on Scotlands future. For me the strangest part of this little story is his switch in alleigance from Celtic to Rangers. Support for a football team is for the vast majority of us, a lifelong alleigance. How in the name of god does one swop between such poles apart bitter rivals as Celtic and Rangers and how does he cope with the Union Jacks and Rule britannia at Ibrox?

The "Dope and Gory " adulators are having a field day in their now familiar abuse as defenders of one off the many detested pieces off bunting they discarded recently down south to replace it with their Flag of St George. They'll soon discard their present choice when they become ashamed of it once again. They're Utopia paradise from the border to the south coast has been vacated by thousands as they rush to get out of it, many even finding their way North to escape.
Why?
I watched an English football team from the Mersey on TV on Saturday managed by a foreigner whose team kicked off with one fully bred English player and finished with two.
Black players were the majority off the rest of them. The same can be said for the first four teams in their Premier League; yet their loyal supporters love to boast of their great English football traditions and achievements yet; keep on ridiculing Scots and their Scottish football daily on TV, Radio and the press.
The only honour they have ever won was a disputed World Cup which has been replayed over and over again to have been shown to be won by the Germans.
As for their insolent attacks on Sean Connery, what do they seem to know what he has done with his money? How many off the celebritiies and politicians (the
majority being English) have their money in off shore tax free banking accounts which will NEVER be revealed to the public?

News for Mr Connery (wherever in the world he might currently be paying his taxes): The sight of all those ENGLISH medal winners arriving home and being greeted by a Scots prime minister is a shame for my country. We not only support a Scottish olympic team but full independence for Scotland. For 300 years we have had to put up with whingeing Scots. Now 68% want independence for England.

Its pretty ironic that the same SNP supporters on these boards are praising Connery for his comments on a possible Scottish Olympic team, while at the same time criticising Chris Hoy for also making comments about the same thing.

Surely Chris Hoy is far more entitled to comment about the Olympics and Scottish sport in general than a retired actor?

Or is Connery allowed to speak because he sticks to the nationalist agenda whereas Hoy isn't because he talks about being 'proud to be part of a British team'?

Poor old Connery. He has committed the two worst sins of which a Scotsman is capable . First, he has become successful: second, he has chosen to live abroad.

But at least in his remarks about the North-East of Scotland and the Trump Project, he hits the nail on the head when he describes the are as being "pretty neglected". Maybe distance does bestow clarity after all.
