A BBC journalist is among the favourites to become the SNP candidate in the hotly contested Glasgow North East by-election, created by the departure of former speaker Michael Martin.
David Kerr, a reporter at BBC Scotland, is understood to have joined two other candidates, local Glasgow councillor James Dornan and European parliament candidate Aileen McLeod.

The SNP will decide on a final shortlist today before local party activists decide on their preferred candidate. The nominated candidate for the seat, Glasgow councillor Grant Thoms unexpectedly pulled out of the race to weeks ago.

Kerr, who has presented and produced BBC Scotland news programmes, stood for the SNP in the Falkirk West by-election in 2000 when he lost narrowly to Labour MP Eric Joyce.

The by-election is expected to take place in November.

Labour last night attacked the SNP for failing to find a candidate from the local area. A spokeswoman said: "It is incredible that the SNP cannot find a single local candidate who wants to fight the seat."

However, the SNP said they had still to receive a full list of candidates to put their names forward.

From seeing Mr Kerr on TV he seems a bright fellow, better than the person who held the seat previously who read statements out like he was in a special needs class.

Amazing, at least one central Scotland BBC presenter who ISN'T a British Nationalist. I'm sure he would do well.

Good luck to the SNP in this by-election. Watch out for ballot stuffing and a huge increase in the postal vote. Are the NuLiebore activists going round the old folks' homes getting their votes sorted yet?

I know David Kerr and he would be an excellent choice.

Smart, decent. articulate and principled he would be an first class addition to an already impressive group of SNP MSP's.

Good luck David and you deserve this chance!

I should explain only old folk can remember a Labour Party that had any principles and were not the disgraceful band of chancers that wear the red rosette these days!

a hard seat to win as labour's 4ths afest in scotland accoring to electoral calculus. much better to fight kilmarnock or linlithgow than some hard core red seats in glasgow.
we can only hope des browne will resign over his failure to see diageo coming, being a big employer in town one would assume he had his finger on the pulse.
perhaps a couple of the troughers who committed fraud were tyhey in civvy street but not by wastemonster rules could be removed now and not at a general election. they are in seats labour would lose. we can only live in hope.
but this seat is not winnable, unfortunately. with sheridan stupidly standing that also minimises an snp protest vote, so it is all about the percentage swing.

Many a hardy thanks for your well-wishing. I worked on it, but at least the taxes were NOT going to Wastemonster! May you all get a breath of fresh air and be able to keep the revenue of the Scots sooner rather than later. We in the States who are the descendants of The Clearances and the '15 and '45 and remember wish you well in those endeavors.

Have no fear. Rmember he outed himself in 2000 when he stood for the SNP against Eric Joyce.

Why doesn't Labour just cut out the middle man and nominate the local postie.
It seemed to work for them in Glenrothes.

Yes and once he leaves the BBC perhaps he can expose all the Common Purpose Graduates among his former colleagues.

IainGlasgow; He probably doesn't know who they are, they try to keep such info secret. You can't undermine society if everyone knows that you are up to something.
Cheers.
