Craig Fairnington: Scotland’s future needs full and frank debate
COMMENT: Craig Fairnington of the Institute of Ideas reflects on the state of the referendum debate, the opinions of Scotland’s youngest voters, and the need for both sides to see the other’s point of view.
The Institute is responsible for the Debating Matters school debate competition – earlier this week the BBC announced a debate for the country’s teenagers at Glasgow’s Hydro arena.
At times, the referendum discussion can be exasperating to say the least. Name-calling, scare stories and wishful thinking riddle the discourse, and as we’ve seen with the Salmond v Darling kerfuffle over TV dates, that can be the case before the debate’s even started.
Thankfully, ‘cybernats’ and scare tactics are far from the only elements of the discussion on the pros and cons of independence.
