Three dead, two critical, after car crash on rural bridge

THREE people have died and two others are in a critical condition in hospital after a collision between two vehicles on a country road.

Police, firefighters and two air ambulances were called to a double bridge on the A614, close to the village of East Cowick, near Goole, East Yorkshire, at about 1.35pm yesterday to reports of a serious crash.

Two people who survived the crash have been airlifted from the scene to Leeds General Infirmary with what police described as life-threatening injuries.

People living in the sparsely populated area said the crash appears to have happened where the A614 crosses the Aire and Calder Navigation canal and Dutch River, which run parallel to each other across the flat farmland.

The double bridge is about a mile south of East Cowick on the road to Thorne.

Recovery vehicles arrived at the scene shortly before 8pm and were last night preparing to lift the wreckage of the two vehicles from the bridge.

A spokesman for police said: “Humberside Police were called at 1.35pm reporting a serious two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A614 at East Cowick, Goole.

“Police, ambulance, air ambulance and fire brigades were in attendance.

“Unfortunately, three people have died in the collision and two have been taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.”

He said it was unlikely any further details about the collision or those involved would be released until later today. The spokesman said the road was expected to be closed until this morning and advised motorists to avoid the area.
