In today’s Rumour Mill: All the reaction to Rangers’ move towards administration; Celtic report financial results; Livingston set to appoint Collins and Hughes.
One story dominates the front and back pages of every newspaper this morning: Rangers yesterday filed notice with the Court of Sesssion of its intent to enter administration...
• The Rangers directors believe that the club were driven to the brink of administration by what they see as the intransigence of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs. (Scotsman)
• Rangers owner Craig Whyte said the decision should have been made “months ago, if not years ago”. “No business can survive with this level of uncertainty,” he said. (Sun)
• Former Ibrox chairman Alistair Johnston has claimed that Sir David Murray could make a return to Rangers as his company have “rights with respect to recourse”. “The Murray Group are considering their options,” he said. “They are the one entity who could address this more aggressively than anybody else.” (Sun)
• Rangers could sell some of their highest paid players such as captain Steven Davis, goalkeeper Allan McGregor and midfielder-turned-striker Lee McCulloch to help secure the future of the club. (Express)
• Whyte admits he can’t pay the club’s current tax bills, despite mortgaging off £24million in season ticket money. (Record)
• Rangers have a minimum of five days and a maximum of ten to appoint an administrator. (Herald)
• If Rangers are to be allowed to play in Europe next season they must present a set of audited accounts to the SFA and the SPL by 31 March. (Sun)
• The players have been summoned to a crisis meeting at Murray Park this morning. (Various)
Despite yesterday’s news, Rangers did manage to complete the signing Gabon international striker Daniel Cousin. He will be in the squad for Saturday’s Ibrox clash with Kilmarnock. (Various)
Just hours before the Rangers news broke, Celtic released their interim results for the six months to 31 December. They showed that, although profits fell from £7 million to £180,000, bank debt was reduced from £9m to £7m.
Livingston are set to appoint John Collins and John Hughes as their new managerial team. The First Division club, who sacked Gary Bollan last week, will bring the two former Hibernian managers on board at Almondvale with a view to bringing through and developing the club’s youngsters. (Scotsman)
