Sevens: Scotland shock Fiji at South Africa sevens

SCOTLAND shocked favourites Fiji with a 21-19 win on the opening day of the Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

In an enthralling match, Andrew Turnbull scored twice, as did Fiji’s Joji Raqamate, but it was Scotland captain Colin Gregor’s try and conversion that made the difference.

However, a narrow 14-7 defeat by series leaders New Zealand and a heavier 33-12 loss to England condemned the Scots to the Bowl semi-finals, where they face Kenya today.

Hosts South Africa and Portugal were the only teams to remain unbeaten on Day One, joining the US, Wales, New Zealand, France, Fiji and Argentina in the main-draw quarter-finals.
