Snow gives SFL the cold shoulder
AS THE SPL returned after the winter break, snow and low temperatures affected the SFL card.
Called off on Friday were the First Division clash between Cowdenbeath and Dunfermline at Central Park and Second Division games between Brechin and Albion Rovers and Stranraer and Arbroath, with Ayr United’s clash with Stenhousemuir failing an inspection yesterday morning.
In the Third Division, Stirling Albion’s meeting with Annan was called off after a morning inspection at Forthbank, while Elgin were spared a long journey over the Border when their visit to Berwick was put off on Friday afternoon.
In England, six matches in Npower League One and eight in League Two were off. The clashes at Bury, Crawley, Crewe, Hartlepool, Scunthorpe, Accrington, Barnet, Port Vale, Rochdale and Southend all fell victim to frozen pitches. A waterlogged pitch did for Torquay, snow scuppered Bristol Rovers, while travel issues forced matches at Oxford, Yeovil and Preston off.
The League One match between Brentford and Tranmere was stopped for two minutes due to Brentford fans pelting Rovers keeper Owain Fon Williams with snowballs.
