Going out: What we’re looking forward to in arts and entertainment this week
A look at the cultural highlights of the week ahead...
Family
The capital’s summer of festivals now kicks off several weeks earlier than it used to, thanks to the Edinburgh International Magic Festival, which returns for its third year on Friday, continuing until 6 July. If you see just one thing, make it the opening night’s two-and-a-half-hour Gala Show at the Lyceum Theatre, featuring magicians from all over the world. (www.magicfest.co.uk)
Music
The Phantom Band are among the headliners at next weekend’s Kelburn Garden Party, but the main selling point, as always, is the unique atmosphere. Head to Largs on Saturday for a festival with a beautiful forest setting, a sea view, mini tennis, poetry readings by a waterfall, fun activities for children and a lively, diverse bill. Art
Glasgow isn’t the only city in Scotland with a vibrant grassroots contemporary art scene – as demonstrated by events such as this Thursday’s Leith Late, in which 16 Edinburgh galleries have teamed up to stage one-off evening events, including an after party with live sets by Paul Vickers and Remember Remember.
