Letter: Just what would Royal role be?

THE logic of the SNP viewing the Queen as their secret weapon in the independence referendum baffles me (News, 4 March). For a party whose roots always seemed to be rooted in republicanism it seems an odd concept.

Presumably Alex Salmond will have taken the opportunity to have discussions with Westminster before or after his announcement that the Queen will be head of state of Scotland should the vote for independence be positive.

Obviously she could not continue to be Elizabeth II of Scotland, so there must have been discussions with the Queen, her advisers and the SNP before such a statement could be made. We should be told what these have been and at what stage these discussions are at now.

Morag Morrell, Kinellar
