Heart bypass success for Emperor Akihito

JAPAN: The country’s 78-year-old Emperor Akihito yesterday underwent successful heart bypass surgery that should allow him to lead a more active life.

The operation lasted about five hours as expected, and Akihito was being monitored in an intensive care unit at the University of Tokyo Hospital. Akihito was booked in for the surgery after recent tests showed his heart condition had worsened over the past year.
