Earthquake strikes New Zealand coast

NEW ZEALAND: An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 struck off the east coast of New Zealand yesterday, but there were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 12 miles off the east coast of North Island.

In February last year a strong quake in Christchurch killed 185 people and destroyed much of the city’s downtown area.
