Business briefs: Omega to expand | Metis sells Allders’ brand names | Sale heads off competition probe Otellini to stand down at Intel

A comprehensive round-up of all news affecting business in Scotland today.

Grant will enable Omega to expand

Medical testing kit maker Omega Diagnostics has been awarded a regional selective assistance grant of up to £150,000 by Scottish Enterprise.

The money will help the Alva firm with plans to scale up manufacturing facilities for its latest test for monitoring HIV positive patients. Omega believes the test could be transformational.

Metis sells Allders’ brand names

Metis Partners, the Glasgow-based intellectual property firm, has been hired to find buyers for a range of brands previously owned by Allders, the department store that went into administration last year.

Along with the Allders name, administrators from Duff & Phelps are seeking to sell furniture brands Maples and Waring & Gillow.

Sale heads off competition probe

TWO electrical wholesaling stores in Scotland are to be sold to deal with competition concerns raised by the Office of Fair Trading over a merger.

Medlock Electrical Wholesalers will buy outlets in Elgin and Stornoway after the acquisition of Electric Center by Edmundson Electrical. The merger will now not be referred to the Competition Commission.

Otellini to stand down at Intel

Intel chief executive Paul Otellini is to retire in May after almost 40 years with the US chip giant, which faces growing pressure from rivals’ tablet and smartphone products.

The world’s largest maker of microprocessors said it will consider internal and external candidates to replace Otellini, who took the helm in 2005.
