SELKIRK'S rise could take another significant leap inside 14 minutes this afternoon if they win their opening tie at the Barratt Jed-Forest Sevens.
The Philiphaugh side, promoted to Division One this season alongside West of Scotland, set out their stall by scooping the first two sevens titles of the season in August and they are intent on rounding off the sevens season on what is forecast
to be a hot afternoon by winning the 'Kings of the Sevens' title at Riverside Park.
They lead the series by nine points from Watsonians, who beat them in the Earlston Sevens final on Sunday, and so can clinch the crown by seeing off Boroughmuir in their opening tie. A first round exit, however, would open the door for Andrew Ker's side to steal in and grab the £2,500 prize-winner's cheque if they go all the way and win the Jed trophy.
But the season will not end there for Selkirk as they are also in the final of the Border League, to be played on Monday night at Kelso. Controversy was injected this week when Jed defeated Melrose to reach the final and immediately called for it to be put back a few days to allow both sets of players time to recover from the sevens. But this was vetoed by the Border League committee.
Meanwhile, the popular Glasgow City Sevens welcome holders Sale and the Glasgow and Gwent Dragons professional teams to Dumbreck this afternoon, alongside Scottish club sides, with a total prize pot of £3,500 on offer.
