IAN McGEECHAN has backed a much-changed British and Irish Lions team to produce another combative performance in tomorrow's Test series finale against South Africa at Ellis Park.
The Lions, 2-0 down with one game left, are desperate for a successful tour conclusion following agonising failures in Durban and Pretoria.

But another Springboks win would make it eight successive overseas Test defeats for the Lions and see them
suffer a first series whitewash at South Africa's hands in 118 years.

To compound the Lions' tough task, they must go into battle without four injured players – centres Brian O'Driscoll and Jamie Roberts, plus props Gethin Jenkins and Adam Jones.

McGeechan has made seven changes following a last-kick 28-25 defeat at Loftus Versfeld six days ago, while Ireland Grand Slam wing Tommy Bowe moves into midfield.

The alterations include a recall for England prop Phil Vickery, who was dropped last weekend following his mauling at the hands of revered Springboks scrummager Tendai 'The Beast' Mtawarira in Durban.

"We've tried to freshen it up – there have been some tight calls over the first two Tests," said Lions head coach McGeechan.

"They (the first two Tests) have been two fantastic games of rugby, with a lot of plusses, and I hope it will be the same again on Saturday.

"We certainly don't want to go back on the way we've been playing, or on our approach and attitude.

"If we get enough right, we hope we will be in there with a shot of winning the game.

"We've got a new challenge. Those players are very keen they show their own capabilities, and I am very encouraged by just what they've done in training this week.

"The players out there will want to respond very positively. If we play well enough to win, it will be a very sweet victory."

South Africa are without banned forwards Schalk Burger and Bakkies Botha, with a raft of changes made by coach Peter de Villiers including starts for full-back Zane Kirchner, wing Jongi Nokwe, fly-half Morne Steyn and hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle, who have just eight caps between them.

Most attention will inevitably be concentrated on the scrum, given 33-year-old Vickery's reappearance opposite Mtawarira, but McGeechan added: "Phil is a world-class prop and an outstanding tourist."

I'm not sure his ability to read a guide book and take photos is in question! ;-)

anyway...everyone know the outstanding tourist in the Lions camp is Mike Blair, he's had so much free time he's gone on safari.

"we've made some tight calls" - starting scrum half and bench scrum half not being one of them it would appear. Whilst I don't think Blair is the best Scottish scrum half he is better than Ellis by some distance.
Just adds fuel to the fire for the AIs and 2010 6N. A team with something to prove.

The sad fact is that the lions in general and the scots in particular are just not good enough . The time taken to limit the damage done at the scrum in the first test sounded the end of any real chance of a tour win. While I agree with Tonyb that Blair is better than Ellis , the only scot who is anywhere near enough to get into the starting lineup is Hines , who although he is talented enough and works hard enough cannot control himself and gives away too many needless penalties and gets too many yellow cards . This lack of discipline is a problem shared throughout the squad that seems to have gone unaddressed by the management and only poor kicking from the boks kept the last test within reach. I am all for standing up and not being bullied and if the situation calls for it giving away a penalty, but the stupid penalties that have been given away have cost us dear. England had a similar problem during the 6 nations and got it sorted . I only hope the lesson has not been lost on the the lions players and coaches.

If the Lions suffer a convincing defeat then McGeechan will leave SA with his reputation in tatters. Anybody who has watch Shane Williams on this tour would know that he should have been left at home, instead he has 2 test caps.

McGeechan has been binned by wasps and will find it difficult to locate a job which will allow him redemption. At 62 he will claim he doesn't need another job which maybe true but being forced into retirement after abject humilliation would not be most peoples choice.

He failed badly in his second stint as scotland coach, binned by wasps after a season of failure and now the lions. Its a sad way to go!

I think this tour has shown that the Lions concept as it used to be is a thing of the past. The coaches of 2001 and 2005 tarnished its reputation beyond redemption and a McGeechan in his dotage has driven a further nail in its coffin this time around. If it must continue let's not bother with the charade of saying players from all 4 countries have an equal chance of touring and/or making the Test team because they clearly haven't. Why not in future select a squad of about 25, play a couple of warm up games in Europe then fly out south to play 3 Test matches in successive weeks? This would shorten the time involved (important in the pro era), avoid the need to play against weakened State teams and everyone would know where they stood prior to the squad even leaving these shores.

Totally agree - Lions concept is dead. How on earth can there be 8 English players in the test side tomorrow? I'll be watching the Williams sisters tomorrow I'm afraid. McGeechan's a busted flush as they say. I just hope the Scots boys take the snub on board for the coming 6 nations.

Some strange selection choices does not mean the Lions should be condemned to the depths of history!!!
