EDINBURGH RUGBY have defended a decision that ended with their fringe players missing Scottish Hydro Electric Premiership club action to coach youngsters and afterwards watch a European Cup tie instead.
The Capital side had come under attack for the move although they admitted it was necessary to have their reserves coaching local youngsters before taking their seats in the stand for the Edinburgh match against Leinster. Speaking before that game an
Edinburgh spokesman has been telling the "Hawick News" in response to criticisms from Hawick coach, Jim Hay: "The plan behind our Kids for Free promotion has been to try to encourage more people, including new people to become interested in our sport. More than 1000 children will be taking part in a range of activities from 9.30am followed by the game in the afternoon.

"The players outwith the match 22 will always be an integral part of our match day – but even more so this weekend – as their attendance has been a key part of the message to this audience."

Edinburgh also said that the fixture scheduling – they would have preferred a Friday night instead of clashing with the Saturday afternoon Premiership programme – was outwith their control.

"The Heineken Cup fixture schedule is determined by ERC in conjunction with its partners. We endeavour to play all our home games on Fridays so that we can avoid a clash with the community game but unfortunately on this occasion we have no choice in the matter.

"We have been working with Scottish Rugby's development team to deliver a large attendance.

"Schools from across our region will be coming en masse either as a reward for the work they have already undertaken with development staff or for their first experience of rugby."

Interesting article, however:

1. Did the stated crowd of 5,376 include "More than 1000 children".

2. Do the SRU not have paid development officers to coach these youngsters?

3. Were all the "Edinburgh fringe players" cleared through the Scottish Rugby Child Protection Policy prior to them being involved with these children from 9:30am?

4. If the Heineken Cup televised kick off times were known to the media weeks in advance, how were Edinburgh not in a position to advise the Clubs that "reserves" would not be released until last Tuesday evening?

A strong whiff of bullsh*t around this and given the Edinburgh result maybe some of these "fringe players" could have done with a game to put pressure on the "comfort zone brigade".

Agree totally with what you say !!
Especially
" A strong whiff of bullsh*t around this and given the Edinburgh result maybe some of these "fringe players" could have done with a game to put pressure on the "comfort zone brigade".

What's the point of being involved in rugby, at any level, if you don't get to play ?
I know two of the fringe lads who haven't played two full games this season .
"What a way to run a railway " comes to mind.

In theory it's got to be a good idea to keep the fringe players playing, however in practice it appears to be far too inconsistent when one side can have one or more pro's playing against a side which has none on the day. You would after all expect any pro playing in any position to have some kind of impact in a game against a bunch of amateurs!

Not that I'm paranoid but any conspiracy theorists could claim that the sru is in a good position to influence the outcome of both the league & the cup by controling who plays & when.

Clubs are not allowed to use pro's in cup games so the SRU cannot control it (unless they ban 2 of your players like melrose last year).

Are the rules on the pro's the same as last year where you can only field two more pro's than you opposition? I believe both teams should be allowed equal numbers of pro's otherwise a team is getting given an unfair advantage!

Do the clubs not have the freedom to reschedule to friday night or Sunday afternoon to avoid the clash?

of course all the kids and fringe players were counted in the offical crowd numbers, desperate to make themselves a reasonable rugby playing and crowd attracting side and they failed in both on Saturday! I do hope for the kids sake all the players had the proper training and checks had been made or this could be another sru disaster in waiting
