Best of the best: walks

1. FIFE COASTAL PATH Regular mentions – for bits of it and the whole thing – push it up to No1 in the walking league. Gillian Thompson was the latest to praise it last week, suggesting doing it in sections and calling in at the many excellent chip shops and restaurants along the way. Kevin Hutchens, who describes his best railway journeys in this issue, is another big fan.

2. NORTH BERWICK LAW, North Berwick, East Lothian Always popular with readers of Recommends, the walk up the Law and the fabulous views out across the Forth (can the Isle of May really be as far away as the boards say?), back towards Edinburgh and over to the Lammermuirs are always a joy. But is it called North Berwick Law of simply Berwick Law? Local knowledge to the rescue, please.

3. GLENCOE Regular recommender Steve Evans has described The Devil's Staircase and all the way through Glencoe as "fantastic and atmospheric", a walk that shouldn't be missed. Many others have praised its beauty. Look out for Sir Jimmy Savile if you go there – you may spot a glint of jewellery from afar.

4. THE HERMITAGE, near Dunkeld George Shanks recommended a stroll through the Hermitage to Ossian's Hall in his best follies category. Doug Jackson has praised the Hermitage for its "well-marked paths through beautiful Caledonian forest", while the tall Douglas firs have featured in Stuart Goodall's best forest walks.

5. FALLS OF CLYDE, Lanark Robert Ritchie, the recommender-in-chief, christened the Falls of Clyde "Britain's greatest falls" in his autumn waterside walk suggestions a year ago.

The area has also been praised several times for its wildlife, including peregrine falcons, badgers, butterflies and the occasional otter – so plenty to see if you venture there.
