CRISIS? What crisis? Outside Ibrox yesterday a desultory knot of supporters staging a silent protest disbanded as soon as a car carrying new signing Maurice Edu hoved into view. Inside the ground, the most visible sign of discontent was a banner in the Broomloan Street Stand that was unfurled ten minutes before the match started.
"We deserve better", it read. By the end of a match in which debutante Pedro Mendes and defender Madjid Bougherra had given performances of consummate quality the banner had disappeared. Better had arrived.

If Bougherra's assurance at the back and
Kyle Lafferty's goal-scoring contribution suggested that this summer transfer window may yet be remembered for more than the loss of Carlos Cuellar, it was the performance of man-of-the-match Mendes that was perhaps the most significant, particularly in light of Barry Ferguson's absence. There was nothing flashy or gaudy about the Portuguese midfielder's play, save for one attempted shot from 20 yards, yet Mendes played with a precision and prescience that had the crowd purring.

It was all the more surprising as Mendes admitted afterwards that he had yet to train with Rangers. His performance was particularly impressive for a man who first met his team-mates in the changing room before his debut. "I arrived (in Glasgow] on Friday morning, walked around the stadium and imagined how it would be," said the Portuguese midfielder. "Today wasn't a surprise for me – I was expecting this type of atmosphere and environment. The fans were fantastic, always supporting the team, it's what everyone told me I'd find. And Hearts were a good team that came to play football, so it was a good game."

If Mendes wasn't surprised by Rangers, nor did his impact shock Walter Smith. The Rangers manager signed the finished article from Portsmouth for £3m this week, a player who won the Champions League with Porto as recently as 2004. "He was very influential today," said Smith. "It's important because it's an area we've been trying to strengthen over the close season."

Mendes was an instant crowd-pleaser. He displayed audacious skills early on when he effortlessly controlled a bouncing ball, drawing a gasp from the crowd which turned into thunderous appreciation as he tapped the ball through to Kris Boyd. Virtually every pass found its target, every run posed a danger or pulled Hearts' defenders out of position.

With American Edu and Steven Davis almost sure to have their moves confirmed this week, possibly to be followed by Mark Bresciano, Rangers' midfield may be much-changed by the time Ferguson – a player Mendes says he knows and respects highly – next sees active duty in October.

They have depth, they brought in Loovens, Sami, McCourt, lost out on Deco, Bent, Palychenko, Tamas,,etc etc etc.

#2 Are you being serious?

You won the league by a tiny margin, and largely because of another team's failings.

Keep telling yourself that your team is the finished article though!!! Celtic need another striker and a couple of defenders!

Mendes looked class. Boyd and Velicka on the other hand looked a bad pairing. Rangers need to play one of them alongside either Darcheville or Miller.

It is heartwarmng that you stinkgers fans are so concerned about our signings.

QUESTIONS

1. is it because we have so much profit and you are jealous?
2. Is it because you lot are panicking already?
3. Is it because it is so boring being a stinkgers fan that you need to concern yourselves about a real team?

We are champions. We have strength in depth (but for a left back). We are simply the best, better than all the rest...where have I heard that before?

At last! An OF thread to comment on!!

Mendes is a good signing - Rangers have for way too long relied on Ferguson to do all the creative stuff in the middle of the park. Fill your midfield with converted centre halves and you get stodge but no guile. Craig Brown and Andy Roxburgh proved that with the national side.

I'm sorry to see Cuellar go, but it was always on the cards after missing out on Europe. Loovens looks a good centre half and I'm sorry we missed out on him too - but he chose Celtic for the CL matches. I hope he doesn't get a regular spot, because I rate him a far better player than Caldwell.

#10 good morning faye, we wont miss cuellar at all.

broadfoot will end up a better centre half than loovens, just wait n see.

barrys not creative!!! he is captain sideways.

The stinkgers are spending money that they haven't got because this is the last throw of the dice for you. Think about the following 4-key points

1. Celtic are already far stronger financially.
2. This year, whatever happens in the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE (you know, the league for CHAMPIONS), we will pull even further ahead.
3. The money that sir "cant get away quick enough" is spending is increasing your debt.
4. If you lose the league again this year (which loooks likely as a result of the poor quality of your squad and your new signings), there will be 2 qualifiying legs next year against teams from the the top 5 leagues (no Kaunas this time).

So win the league or spend the next 25 years follow following the CHAMPIONS.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

The traditional start of season optimism from fans of Rangers. Like many of their other traditions its one of course that will prove to be misplaced.

Keep it up though, it keeps us amused meantime.

#12 Are you for real?

How are we increasing our debt when we've sold Hutton for £9m, Cuellar fot £8m and had a UEFA cup run that netted £15m?

My gripe is that we should be spending MORE!!

In the (unlikely) event that Celtic drop points to Dundee Utd today the triumphalism will start to disappear like the metaphorical snow off the proverbial dyke and we'll be back to the harping so common to these threads only 6 weeks before te end of the season. VofH is too slow, Ooh Aah is sh1yet, Strachan must go blah blah.

Ah, I see it's the season for bravado from Gers.

How long wiill it last this time before you lot run and hide - or change your usernames to avoid reference to your previous posts?

The latest crop of "Rangurs are great noo" posts kinda remind me of:

a) when PLG was gonna "sort oot WGS"
b) confident predictions re a Rangurs "quad" last season.

Do any of our apparently gallus silly billies care to give us an update on these previous boasts?

No delusions of anything pal, its just a line from a song - as in 'We are the people who sing of victory, We follow Glasgow Rangers from Kilmarnock to Dundee..................!

So, a follow follower of Scotland's second Club proudly posts that yous are "the peepil" - and then accuses ME of lying!!! LOL!!

It's easy to see why we differ this fine Sunday morn:

I like fact.
You rely on "words to a song" justifications for the nonsense you post, and doubtless believe.

So, cast yourselves as some sort of master race if you choose, my demented friend, but let's not lose sight of reality:

a) Yous are Scotland's second Club.
b) Yous were kicked ooot of Europe by a Lithuanian Club before the SPL started!
c) Yous are in a mess. Your had four decent players last season: Bazza (injured for months), Carlos & Davis (both left), and Thomosn (posted missing so far this season)
d) RFC fans are Scotland's shame.
e) SDM wants oot - but no buyer can be found.

Aye, but yous are the peepil!!!

Were I to believe the words of songs I sing, note that "I joined the IRA" - but I'm not as stupid as you. It's just a song (Boys of the Old Brigade)

Oh dear dear dear...getting nasty now? I guess that's what I would expect of your sort.

How very proud you must be of titles won in 1894, 1912, and 1931! I guess your sort reckons they're much more important in establishing supremacy than titles won in 2006, 2007, and 2008......or winning the European Cup. LOL!!!

Yous really are a strange bunch!!!

I can just see some football expert appraising Scottish Football and telling us RFC are Scotland's top Club.....because they won a lot of titles in thr 19th century and early 20th century!!!

BTW, you do appear to have got the words of your delusional anthem wrong:

Surely it should be:

We are the supporters,
Who sing of victory,
We'll follow Glasgow Rangers,
From Kilmarnock to Dundee,
We follow Glasgow Rangers,
Our hearts are strong and true,
WE ARE THE PEOPLE,
Who cheer the boys in blue.

Still, if yous cannae even get the name of yer team right, I guess I cant expect much from you! LOL!

Rangers punched above their weight last season, no denying but can't have become a bad team overnight. They were beaten by fixture congestion, injury and luck (which Celtic seem to get in barrow loads). However, with Cuellar (and Hutton) gone, the signings of Mendes, Edu, Davis, Bougherra, Lafferty & Velickia look very good indeed, with maybe Bresciano to follow. I've never been a Kenny Miller fan so don't think much of that signing. Celtic are already stuttering and with strength in depth now, Gers ought to regain the ascendancy in Scotland. Not worried by CL as Celtic will crash out of the group. One question Gers' fans - what has happened to Stevie Smith?

Steven Smith picked up an injury just prior to RFC's pre-season German tour, which it was predicted would keep him out for at least 6 weeks.

He should be available for first-team duty by the time that the SPL restarts in mid-September after the Scotland international matches.

Coincidentally, Hearts didnt get a penalty for ball to hand either.

As for the other DU claim, he clearly dived.

Now, if you're genuinely concerned re refereeing, can you please look at this clip and then explain to us why the Ref handled obvious dives so differently?

--- Broadfoot embarrassing dive - free kick
--- Boyd embrarrassing dive - free kick (led to goal)
--- Mika embarrassing dive - no free kick - booked - led to being dismissed.

It's all on the vid.
