LOTHIANS-based Labour Euro-MP David Martin has warned European plans for a trade ban on seal products do not go far enough.
And he said only a complete ban would satisfy the people of Europe.

Mr Martin, Scotland's longest serving Euro-MP and a former animal rights campaigner, said: "Having first called for this ban over 23 years ago when I visited the ice floes in Canada and witnessed the inhumane carnage which takes place during the annual cull, I am pleased that the European Commission has at long last come forward with proposals for a ban in the trade in seal products.

"However, the proposals do not go far enough and are open to abuse – much of the killing takes place in remote areas where effective monitoring of humane killing would be impractical.

"A partial ban would be unmanageable and unenforceable."

He said a recent opinion poll in Canada found an overwhelming majority – 86 per cent – of Canadians said the EU should be allowed to restrict trade in seal products.

Mr Martin said: "Let there be no more blood on the ice – only a complete ban will do."

Yes Mr Martin I agree, in the wild all these cute seals will be left to starve to death when their loving parents have overpopulated their breeding grounds and eaten all the food available. Then they can die slowly rather than inhumanely and quick!

Hardly surprising. Bans of any sort never go far enough for a minority of stupid, selfish, short-sighted, jackbooted morons who's only goal in life is to make things an unpleasant and un-neccesarily inconvenient for everyone else.

anyway, Martin is in the stupid labour party, so what do you expect?

We kill cows, sheep, pigs, chicken, etc, why not seals?

I have recently eaten beef, pork, chicken and fish, but I have never eaten seal. (I don't like mutton, too fatty and too expensive)

I too am abhorred by the scenes of the slaughter, by clubbing , of baby seals in Canada, but what is the purpose of this killing?

Should we kill animals or not?
That is a serious question of separate debate.

But, if we do, what is the purpose of that killing?

Where the whole animal is used, it would seem to be acceptable.

I am very much opposed to killing animals merely to obtain one certain part, such as a tusk or horn or gall-bladder: or when such killing puts the species at risk.
Or, to kill when that animal is only a potential nuisance.

Do we kill flies?, even if they are part of the eco-system?
If we say that no killing is acceptable we should include all forms of life, even insects.

All these are questions are open to serious debate, but, let's get rid of this horrible and deceptive word "cull" and replace it with more accurate words, such as "kill" or "slaughter"!!!!!

I Do hate to see animals get killed, but the way they kill seals is almost like tradition. They have been killing seals with club for many, many years.
I think that they should be left alone to hunt the seals how they like .
Other parts of the world kill other animals like dogs in worse ways.
Go pick on them!
