LABOUR leadership contender Cathy Jamieson today called for greater legal protection for rail and bus staff at risk of assault.
She proposed an extension of the current Emergency Workers legislation and a boost for the British Transport Police in Scotland.

Ms Jamieson said according to BTP statistics only 50 per cent of attacks on staff were detected.

And she said more action was needed to ensure that offenders are caught and then dealt with by the courts.

She said: "Many Scots rely on trains and buses. We've seen too many examples of transport staff being assaulted while trying to serve the public."

For years I have criticised the conductors/guards on trains for not doing their job of 'looking after their passengers and checking tickets of passengers.
After talking with many of the staff I now fing myself having to withdraw this cricism haveing found the real problem lies with the management of the train operating companies.
It appears these managers are to quick to support passengers who are critical of the actions of the staff without giving due support to the staff in performance of their duties.
Let me make one thing very clear I have been a manager in industry for many years and do not just accept any old tale but the tales I have heard convince me there is more than an element of truth spoken.
In most of industry the better managers do not hide themselves in their offices but 'walk the job' yet despite many years as a commuter I can honestly say rail managers must be pretty good at disguise.
