Griffiths in human rights appeal to China
CITY MP Nigel Griffiths is to write to the Chinese ambassador after talks with Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama, who is on an 11-day visit to the UK.
Mr Griffiths said he would be raising issues of humans rights and religious freedom and urging Madam Fu Ying to accept Tibet's claims for autonomy.
The Dalai Lama met MPs and peers at Westminster yesterday.
Mr Griffiths, Labour MP for Edinburgh South, said: "The Dalai Lama was very firm over not seeking separation. He outlined a scheme where defence and foreign affairs would be the responsibility of central government in China, but issues such as education, culture and the environment would be controlled by Tibet.
"It was a great honour to welcome the Dalai Lama to parliament. I first met him when I invited him as a councillor to Edinburgh City Chambers in 1985 and I have kept in contact ever since."
