THE woman who led the successful 2014 Commonwealth Games bid was today named as the new chair of national sports agency sportscotland.
Louise Martin, who was an international swimmer for ten years, will begin her four-year term next month.
The appointment follows the controversial removal of the previous sportscotland chairwoman Julia Bracewell and Institute of Sport chairman Dou
gie Donnelly when the two organisations were merged.
The pair were asked to resign their posts by Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell and opposition MSPs accused the Scottish Government of vindictiveness because Ms Bracewell and Mr Donnelly were both understood to have opposed the merger.
Today Mr Maxwell said: "This is an exciting time for Scottish sport and I am delighted that Louise Martin, a leading figure in the industry, will be chairing our newly streamlined national body.
"The wealth of experience and knowledge which Louise will bring to the board will help to ensure sportscotland delivers for sport effectively and efficiently, for the benefit of the whole country."
As chair of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland Ms Martin played a key role in Glasgow's 2014 bid.
The new post is part-time – 2.5 days per week – and she will be paid £27,531 a year.
