Cuts mean closure of 14 nursery kitchens

KITCHENS in schools and nurseries across Edinburgh are to close as part of cost- cutting measures by the city council.
The SNP/Lib Dem-run authority is to shut the kitchens at 14 out of its 18 nurseries and six primary schools in the next few weeks.

It is the latest in a series of cuts which have seen each primary school in Edinburgh having to save £10,000, the equivalent of dropping a learning assistant, and school meal costs increased by 10p.

Yesterday, the cuts were blamed on local-authority funding. George Foulkes, the Lothians Labour MSP, said:

"What happened was that John Swinney (the finance secretary] top-sliced the money for councils and only offered it back to them if they promised to freeze the council tax… it has left them short of money."

The Scottish Government have denied the accusations and said they have provided record funding for councils.

This happened in Aberdeen at least 10 years ago. One school kitchen makes the food for at least 6 local primary schools. The food is delivered in heated trailers, and there has been no problems at all. I can't see what the fuss is about.

SHAME, SHAME SHAME...One excellent way of saving £1.3 MILLION would be to totally axe all forms of funding support for the plethora of 'Winter Festivals' where, as reported in the Evening News last night there was a £300,000 OVERSPEND on the budget.

Surely the FUTURE citizens of this city should take the highest priority over the apparent need to attracts thousands of drunken louts ruining the centre of the city. Unique Eevents have been reported as receiving a £190,000 managment fee - (1) Is this a higher priority that wee kids nutrition? (2) Was competitive tendering implemented for the 'management' (3) When are we going to see audited and verified accounts for the whole of the Cultural Hiroshima over the 'Festive' season.
Shame... shame.. shame,, ESPECIALLY on our elected representatives who are supposed to (a) exercise fiscal prudence (b) take into account the REAL priorities in finance and (c) take cognisance of the views of those who elected them! (NO chance)

Everybody supports public expenditure cuts until they start to affect them. The SNP's cuts have been savage.

Don't know what the problem is - back in the 50s and 60s when I was at school, all meals were prepared in a vast council kitchen in the heart of Edinburgh and shipped out to a multitude of schools across the city. Didn't do us any harm then, and it won't now.

Makes perfect financial sense if you are under orders to keep costs down. If you don't like it, do as (6) suggests - pay for the kitchen out your own pocket.

So our pathetic council in Edinburgh will spend millions on promoting and keeping tourists in our town all year round but are stopping cooking meals in every school for OUR CHILDREN!

I don't see the problem.

There is no mention that that the provision of dinners will be stopped, just that they won't be cooked on the premises.
