Zoo visitor numbers down
VISITOR numbers at Edinburgh Zoo have slumped by more than 90,000 despite a bumper year for other leading attractions.
The 141 per cent fall - equivalent to 250 visitors a day - is thought to have cost the zoo more than 1 million.
Over the past few months 16 jobs have been axed to help stave off a financial crisis.
The zoo blamed extreme snow conditions which forced them to close on 14 days in January, November and Decemeber, and poor weather in their peak months of July and August.
• A BEAVER captured on the River Tay died at Edinburgh Zoo from septic shock, an independent post-mortem examination has confirmed. The death led to calls from campaigners to end the policy of "rehoming" beavers living wild on the River Tay.
