Zoo given reprieve but closure threat remains

GLASGOW Zoo has been saved from immediate closure after its operators submitted a rescue plan to the city council.

City officials had threatened closure after more than 600 animal welfare complaints were recorded and inspections revealed a heavy degree of disrepair.

But following an inspection this month, Brian Kelly, the council’s director of environmental services, said the zoo could remain open while work continued to bring it up to scratch. He added: "Although some works have been completed, serious issues remain to be resolved including security, fire safety procedures and risk assessment.

"In addition, the operators have acknowledged additional funds are required to enable further site maintenance and clearance."

The zoo’s management hopes to raise 4 million by selling off land for homes, money which will be used to wipe out debts and improve conditions for animals and tourists.
