Are cars the problem or the answer regarding the state of Princes Street? You have a say on this and other things
The news that an amusement arcade is to remain on Princes Street left you unamused and provoked a general tirade about the Capital's Street of Shame.
"Undesirability of the west end of Princes Street". You mean the whole of Princes Street. The place, for the last ten years, has been going downhill.
allknowing
I'm actually quite sad to see Princes St in such a state. So well done to the council and TIE.
mystic, Edinburgh
Sadly Princes Street is just one big mess nowadays. Was already before the tram works. Chewing gum all over the pavements, people sleeping rough, beggars, dirty puddles and cheap and nasty shops

Compare Princes Street with any of the major shopping streets in Glasgow, and it's scary. While Glasgow has the Buchanan Galleries, designer outlets, and high-end retailers, Princes Street has puggies, Poundland and purveyors of cheap tartan tat.

Near the West End there are five shops in a row which include FOUR tacky tartan shops and the Virgin/Zavvi store lying empty. It looks disgusting. How long is it before the empty store is turned into a cheap offensive tacky tourist shop too? These shops are a disgrace.

Some of you thought not letting cars on Princes Street was the cause of its decline. But as others pointed out . . .
Just one question: if stopping cars going along a street causes the decline like this, then why is Buchanan Street so famous for shopping?

Look at the Zeil in Frankfurt, which has the highest turnover of any shopping street in Europe. It's entirely pedestrianised (but served by a metro and nearby ... trams!). In fact, now I come to think about it, just about every major European high street is pedestrianised.

And the final word on the transport issue . . .
Princes Street is nothing more than a linear bus depot nowadays. It's even got ticket machines down its length! However, don't worry, the trams will solve all those problems
Alternative (High-Octane) Fuel Head
There was a welcome for the news that the Hearts war memorial will return to its place at Haymarket.
Glad to see it will be back in Haymarket and the men who served will be remembered on the 11th, as they should be.

Well done to all involved, I'm sure all your hard work came as a timely reminder to the council that there are some things in this great city of ours that they can't mess with.

The subject of memorials led to a row about James Connolly (and it's not even June yet).
Edinburgh needs a better James Connolly memorial. More than the little plaque in the Cowgate. The man was a HERO. And a son of Edinburgh.
East at Easter
You can shove your James Connolly memorial where the sun don't shine. Just what we need, another symbol of hatred and division in the city, clown! Better off with a Billy Connolly memorial!!

Why should Edinburgh remember a man that would not even admit to the fact that he was born here?

Okay, I guess it was only a suggestion. Billy it is.
