Superbugs, an abandoned dog, Fringe ticket box office headaches and Nelson Mandela's birthday all vie for attention

Newly-published government figures revealed the death toll in Lothians hospitals from the superbug Clostridium difficile – known as C. diff – hit 40 in a single year. Over to you...

C. diff is a complicated bug, its spread and action difficult to properly describe in a newspaper.

I used to drive a complicated bug. It was VW Beetle. Had a rubbish gearbox.

My mother died from MRSA. Glad you think these complicated bugs are there for you to make light of - sick.

Sorry asparagus, but bad taste isn't something that bothers a sizeable chunk of online contributors – check out the caption contest entries if you need more proof. In other news, many of you were moved by the plight of the abandoned dog Jet, who was left tied to railings in Rossie Place.

Aye and there's homeless folk starving in the streets!

Old Reekies Big Team

I couldn't give a sh*t about homeless folk, they can change their situation ... I do give a sh*t about defenceless animals being dumped. Anyone who thinks it's a joke to dump animals needs their head examined.

How much is a lethal injection?

How much is a lethal injection? .. for YOU it would be free

Non Believer

Two months old, what a start in life. At least, he will get a wonderful new home with someone to truly love him. I hope they find the owners and tie them to the railings and leave them, see how they like it!!!

There's no pithy retort to a comment with three exclamation marks, so let's move on to another story. What about the ongoing Fringe box office computer bookings trauma then?

There appears to be a total lack of testing of these systems. As a promoter of a Fringe show the Fringe charge us a huge amount of money and then fail to deliver a quality of service. Next year I will consider running my own web based box office system so I do not have to rely on edfringe.com

It's probably an integration issue between the website and the payment service provider (the ones who process the card securely) the data is being passed from the website but not back from the payment provider so the website reports an error but the card details are still taken - poor programming/testing.

It's heading straight for us!, Edinburgh

Whoa, slow down there Professor Boffin - you're blinding us with science. Can anyone offer a jargon-free explanation?

Sounds like an IT bug to me.

Alternative (High-Octane) Fuel Head, Edinburgh

That's more like it, A(HO)FH - something in laymen's terms. Maybe they should try turning it off then turning it on again? Chewing the end of your pencil can sometimes help too.

Right, it's time for an 'And finally'. And finally, as the debate raged online over whether or not city money should have been spent celebrating Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday...

One thing about Nelson Mandela we can all agree on. He'll never win the Open.
