Your review: Porgy and Bess, Festival Theatre

Heather Bruce, 39, Barnton, Systems analyst: "It was really lively and I really enjoyed it. It was my first opera. I had heard all the songs before on records but this really brought them to life. I couldn't make out what they were saying but it didn't matter because you could follow the story. Porgy was absolutely astounding – what a voice! They all had huge voices. I liked the costumes too."

Amanda Drollinger, 28, unemployed, Roslin: "It was quite an interesting production. I recognised a lot of the songs and I had the originals going through my mind as I was listening but I liked the variation. Porgy and Bess were great but I really liked Maria as a singer, she was very funny and she had a lot of personality in her singing. She captured the sort of person who I thought would be in that role."

David Ross, 61, retired, Blackhall: "The production was fabulous and Porgy was tremendous, he really carried the whole thing. The setting was fairly obviously still the Deep South, but it seemed to be timeless in the extent that it still seemed to apply to Soweto."
