You can't help smiling along to Matt Kirshen
Matt Kirshen: Keep Smiling Matt. Just Keep Smiling Assembly Rooms, George Street
GIVEN his permanent wide grin and recent success as a finalist on mainstream US TV show Last Comic Standing, you would expect Matt Kirshen's appeal to lie in a brand of squeaky-clean, inoffensive humour.
Indeed, the show's introduction gives the impression that Kirshen's comedy is suitable for all the family as his innocent little face lights up as he talks of childhood outings. The facade, however, doesn't last long as pint-sized Kirshen smoothly launches into one cynical critique of Americana after the other, seeming more and more like a miniature Richard Dawkins.
Many comedians approach a one-hour show by using lukewarm audience banter and saving their best jokes till last. With Matt Kirshen, the laughs are guaranteed and don't stop from beginning to end.
