Wreaths laid to mark the birth of Burns
WREATHS were laid at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery to mark the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth yesterday.
East Lothian Provost Sheena Richardson was among dignitaries taking part in the ceremony.
The annual Robert Burns ceremony is organised by the Edinburgh & District Burns Clubs Association, which was founded 80 years ago and represents all of the affiliated individual Burns Clubs in the Capital and the Lothians.
The wreath laying was just one of many events across Scotland celebrating the Burns anniversary, which also marked the start of the Year of Homecoming.
Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan may visit Edinburgh later in the year to take part in the Homecoming programme.
He had to turn down an invitation to the Homecoming Burns Supper in Alloway at the weekend because of other commitments.
