World-wide acts come together for 60th annicersary of Tattoo

THE Edinburgh Military Tattoo will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a programme of music, song, dance and drama from around the world, organisers said today.

The Diamond Jubilee Tattoo will see international acts join more than 1,000 performers from the Army on the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle from August 6 to 28.

Bands from the US, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Switzerland and Jordan will play along with The Representative Band of the Border Guard of the Republic of Poland – which is performing at the event for the first time.

Major General Euan Loudon, chief executive and producer of the Tattoo, said: "2010 will see one of the most colourful productions we've staged in the northern hemisphere.

"I am delighted to welcome the first Polish performers to appear at the Tattoo. Their dynamic display of music and movement will be something to behold."

A number of Scottish regiments, including the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and the Black Watch, will take part in the traditional massed pipe band.

The combined bands will also be joined by students from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in their military tribute Here's to the Heroes.

One of the more unusual acts scheduled for this year's Tattoo is the Imps Motorcycle Display Team, a group of 38 stunt performing youths aged from four to 16.

In recognition of the anniversary, Major Gavin Stoddart, son of the first lone piper George Stoddart, will return to this symbolic role playing the final piece, Sleep Dearie Sleep, against the night sky.

Maj Gen Loudon said: "This Tattoo will provide a profusion of variety from around the world which will, I hope, stand as a fitting testament to the traditions of Edinburgh's famous Tattoo and a celebration of its Diamond Jubilee."
