Hundreds of Greeks scuffled for free fruit and vegetables handed out by farmers in Athens yesterday, leaving one man trampled and injured and prompting an outcry over the poverty caused by austerity cuts.

Images of people struggling to grab bags of tomatoes and leeks thrown from a lorry dominated national television.

The food handout in Athens began peacefully as hundreds lined up outside the agriculture ministry, where farmers, protesting at high production costs, laid out tables piled high with produce to be given away.

Tensions flared when the stalls ran out of produce and dozens of people – some carrying children – mobbed a nearby lorry, desperate for free food.
