The end for Europe's oldest Elephant

Europe’s oldest male elephant, Murugan, will be put to sleep today at the Amsterdam zoo.

Murugan, 50, has lived at the Artis zoo in the Dutch capital since he was donated by the late Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the 1950s.

The "kind, amiable" animal is not recovering from problems associated with his age, said zoo spokeswoman Anita Almasi.
