A SUBMARINE-LIKE vessel filled with about £175 million worth of cocaine was seized off the Guatemalan coast, United States officials said.
Four suspected smugglers were operating the semi-submersible vessel when it was spotted and seized on Sunday evening by officials from the US Customs and Border Patrol, US Navy and the US Coast Guard.
When the suspects realised they had been located by drug-surveillance aircraft patrolling the eastern Pacific, they began to scuttle the vessel.
Coast Guard officials, guided by the reconnaissance plane, intercepted the sub and detained the smugglers, who were transporting some five tonnes of the drug.
The interception occurred off the coast of Central America about 300 miles south-west of the Mexico-Guatemala border.
