prison guards in Greece have foiled an escape attempt by helicopter involving at least four inmates, shooting and wounding one of them in the leg.
Police yesterday identified only one of the would-be escapees, Panagiotis Vlastos, a convicted murderer and racketeer serving a life term. He was shot.
They said at least three others, all unnamed Albanians, were also involved in the escape bid.
A helicopter carrying four passengers approached the prison in the central city of Trikala and someone inside opened fire on the guards. The helicopter was forced down and its occupants were arrested.
