A BUILDING under construction has collapsed in the centre of Tanzania’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.
Police initially said 15 people had been killed. Hours later, the mayor of central Dar es Salaam said two people had been killed and 17 survivors found.
The building was at least 12 storeys high. Witnesses said cars had been crushed in the collapse and people had used their hands to pull away masonry.
Rescuers said they heard the voices of people trapped, possibly including boys who had been playing football nearby. Some said construction workers may also have been trapped.
