Workers meet for bridge's 45th birthday
THOSE who worked on the Forth Road Bridge are to share their memories at an event to celebrate its 45th birthday this week.
Former workers on the bridge, which was opened in 1964, will be joined by those who attended the official opening by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on 4 September, 1969, at an event on Friday.
Alex Porteous, 73, of Edinburgh, told of a terrifying moment when, after a fall, he landed close to the edge "looking over the road edge at the Forth".
He added: "On the opening day, I stood on the bridge in the fog and couldn't see the ships, but the guns were fired from the battleship below, which made the bridge shake."
The bridge, which cost 19.5 million and took six years to build, is expected to be used for public transport only when the new 2 billion crossing is opened. Work is ongoing to establish the longevity of the existing crossing as the process of drying out suspension cables continues.
