Workers fired for e-mail chat win tribunal
THREE staff at a ScottishPower call centre who were fired for chatting via the company’s e-mail system yesterday won their unfair-sacking claims.
An employment tribunal in Glasgow also ordered a subsidiary of the firm to find new jobs for Yvonne Long, Helen Longridge and Karen Duncan. The workers were sacked from the call centre in Glasgow after an investigation revealed that they had exchanged hundreds of e-mails. Mrs Long sent and received 745 messages over six days and Ms Longridge 537.
The tribunal ruled that the firm’s rules over e-mail use had not been clearly defined.
ScottishPower was considering an appeal. It said: "Most people reading details of the sheer volume of the messages and the language used could only agree that they fall outside any definition of reasonable personal use."
