Work begins to uncover canal history
WORK is expected to begin at a Tollcross gap site which is hoped will uncover the legacy behind the construction of the Union Canal.
The archaeological dig at the original Lochrin Basin has been ordered by Edinburgh city council.
Remains from the original construction in 1818 are expected to be found, while traces of the old Haig whisky distilleries could also be uncovered.
It was reported this morning that the site could become so significant guided tours may be offered there.
The former Arnold Clark garage is the subject of a 35 million housing development, but the dig must take place before work begins.
Ronin Toolis, of AOC archaeologists, reportedly said: "Despite the archaeological and historical significance of the Union Canal, very little is documented about the Lochrin Basin.
"The archaeology is very important as it will provide the only real record of the basin."
