Woman and youth shot after gang fight
A 20-YEAR-OLD woman and a 16-year-old boy were recovering last night after they were both shot during an incident in Glasgow.
The shooting happened in Ogilvie Street, in the Tollcross area of the city shortly before midnight on Friday.
The pair were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the woman later discharged.
The teenage victim was kept in hospital and his condition was described by staff as "stable".
Between six and eight men were involved in the gun attack on the couple, a spokesman for Strathclyde Police said.
According to eyewitness accounts, tensions had flared up at about 10pm when 30 youths became involved in a fight. Knives, snooker cues and bottles are all reported to have been used.
The witness said that about two hours later a gunshot was heard and a woman shouted that she had "nearly had her arm blown off". Police and an ambulance crew arrived at the scene shortly afterwards.
Detective Sergeant Alex McArthur said: "It is only by good fortune that the woman and the teenage boy were not more seriously injured.
"Our enquiries are still at an early stage and we are presently trying to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
"This happened in a residential area and I would urge local people to come forward if they have any information at all which might help us with our enquiries," he added.
He said the suspects ran off in the direction of Newbank Gardens and appealed to anyone who could help identify them to contact police urgently.
"We have officers in the area providing reassurance to the public and I would encourage any residents who have concerns to speak to them," he added.
