Woman,77, dies after being hit by hospital van
AN ELDERLY woman died after being struck by an NHS delivery van reversing in the grounds of the Western General Hospital yesterday afternoon.
The accident occurred on an access road between the main Porterfield Road entrance and the catering department annex to the main hospital building.
The 77-year-old woman, from Penicuik, was immediately taken to the hospital's resuscitation room, but despite the efforts of medical staff, she later succumbed to her injuries.
The 22-year-old male driver of the van was uninjured.
Accident investigators from Lothian and Borders Police Road Policing Branch attended the scene and later appealed for witnesses. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
