She began walking with a friend in Raise Street, where they went their separate ways and the victim then continued along to the junction with Giffen Road.

There, she was pushed to the ground by a man who ran off with her handbag.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

The suspect is described as white, around 25 years old and 5ft 9in to 6ft 2in. He was wearing a grey hooded top and was last seen running on Giffen Road.

Detective Inspector William McDicken, of Saltcoats CID, said: “This is a sickening attack on a defenceless woman as she was making her way home from a night out with her friend. The man responsible for this cowardly attack must be caught as soon as possible.

“Officers are currently carrying out inquiries and gathering CCTV images to gain more information on the suspect.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area of Raise Street and Giffen Road between 11.30pm and 11.45pm last night who either witnessed this crime take place, or who may have seen a man matching the description of the suspect, to come forward as a matter of urgency.”
