The family of a 71-year-old man knocked down and killed at the weekend have appealed for any witnesses to contact police.

James Watson was struck by a silver Land Rover Freelander on Bentinck Drive in Troon, South Ayrshire, at about 8.10pm on Sunday.

Emergency services attended the accident and Mr Watson was rushed to Ayr Hospital by ambulance, but he died a short time after arrival.

The 67-year-old woman who was driving the Land Rover was not injured, according to Police Scotland.

Mr Watson’s family have paid tribute to him and appealed for any witnesses to the crash.

A statement released through police read: “Jim was a loving family man who will be sorely missed by his wife, Elaine and all his family.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the police.”

Officers said inquiries are continuing and urged any witnesses to the accident, or anyone who saw Mr Watson prior to that, to contact them on 101.
