Winds of change in the air for Lewis
THE largest community wind farm in the UK was approved yesterday in the Western Isles.
Councillors backed the 11 million, 9MW development, which will be a joint venture between Point and Sandwick on Lewis. However the Scottish Government is to have the final say over the go-ahead, after aviation bodies lodged objections.
Highlands and Island Airports, along with National Air Traffic Services, are concerned the scheme may affect radar and electronic navigation systems.
In all, four locally owned turbine schemes on the island were approved yesterday which will see the area's output rise from 4MW to 18.6MW.
