Whistleblowers

The Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 was designed to provide legal protection for UK whistleblowers exposing corruption and misconduct.

Widespread NHS malpractice and our MPs’ dodgy expenses underline the need both for a free press and the protection of those who reveal such scandals to the media. In addition, all scientists owe a debt of gratitude to the
researcher who divulged the misuse of data and professional
misconduct behind global warming’s Climategate.

It is, therefore, alarming to learn that a British police force has arrested three staff members who revealed details of its new commissioner’s “expenses”.

There is a clear national interest in protecting public service employees who lay bare its endemic waste and improbity at a time when tax money is so tight.
