Where is Russia's logic?

I am trying to understand Russian logic in the Caucasus. It seems that if a republic seeks to secede from Russia, for example Chechnya, it must be bombed and blasted into submission. If, however, a province of a foreign country, let's say Georgia, seeks secession, then that foreign country must be bombed and blasted into submission.

As a nationalist, I believe strongly that if an appreciable ethnic group within a state shows by democratic means that it wishes to leave, then it is only polite to let it do so. In the Georgian/Chechen situation, the position does seem quite unclear, and the Russians have merely managed to muddy the water.
