What is a pulse oximetry test?

A PULSE oximetry test is used to measure blood oxygen levels in newborn babies.

A small probe is put on the baby's hand or a foot and a special machine is switched on to obtain a reading.

The test is usually performed within 24 hours of birth and is simple, painless and non-invasive.

It could help identify underdevelopment of part of the heart, obstructions that block blood flow, valve defects and hole-in-the-heart conditions. The test can also flag up problems such as respiratory disorders and infections.
